Free volatile compounds were isolated from 21 Croatian species studied by hydrodistillation (HD) and microwave extraction (ME) and analyzed by gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) distinguished some clusters based on the relative proportion of major compounds, such as hexadecanoic acid, hexahydrofarnesyl acetone, phytol, -caryophyllene, and caryophyllene oxide, which were identified in all species studied by both isolation methods. In addition to these compounds, germacrene D, δ-selinene, and eicosane were also identified in five samples from dry habitats isolated using ME. -aromadendrene and β-ionone are particularly abundant in five species from wet habitats isolated by both methods. The peculiarities of species from moderate habitats isolated with HD are benzene acetaldehyde, -nonanal, and the identification of significant compounds from the hydrocarbon class, while the peculiarity of ME is ()-β-damascenone. In this article, we present new results on the phytochemical characterization of species from different habitats. The biological potential of these compounds should be further investigated for a better understanding and utilization of the specialized plant metabolites.

Invasive alien species such as freshwater snails have significantly affected the food, environment, and the health of humans and animals, which have unfortunately received insufficient attention. To facilitate the study of viromes in snail species, we compared the enrichment effect of cesium chloride (CsCl) and sucrose density gradient ultracentrifugations in the recovery of diverse viruses in Pomacea canaliculata and Achatina fulica. First, we showed that CsCl-based ultracentrifugation enriched more virus contigs and reduced the nucleic acid background of the Pomacea canaliculata and was thus beneficial for virus recovery.

Sebaceous free fatty acids are metabolized by multiple skin microbes into bioactive lipid mediators termed oxylipins. This study investigated correlations between skin oxylipins and microbes on the superficial skin of pre-pubescent children (N = 36) and adults (N = 100), including pre- (N = 25) and post-menopausal females (N = 25). Lipidomics and metagenomics revealed that Malassezia restricta positively correlated with the oxylipin 9,10-DiHOME on adult skin and negatively correlated with its precursor, 9,10-EpOME, on pre-pubescent skin.

Microbial diversity and interactions in the rhizosphere play a crucial role in plant health and ecosystem functioning. Among the myriads of rhizosphere microbes, Pseudomonas and Bacillus are prominent players known for their multifaceted functionalities and beneficial effects on plant growth. The molecular mechanism of interspecies interactions between natural isolates of Bacillus and Pseudomonas in medium conditions is well understood, but the interaction between the two in vivo remains unclear.

The detrimental impact of emerging pollutants, specifically microplastics (MPs), on the ecological environment are receiving increasing attention. Freshwater ecosystems serve as both repositories for terrestrial microplastic (MP) sources and conduits for their subsequent entry into marine environments. Consequently, it is imperative to rigorously investigate the toxicological effects of MPs on freshwater ecosystems.
