Melatonin is a well-known animal hormone with relevant and multiple cellular and hormonal roles. Its discovery in plants in 1995 has led to a great diversity of molecular and physiological studies that have been showing its multiple actions also in plants. Its roles as a biostimulator and modulator agent of responses to abiotic and biotic stresses have been widely studied. This review raises the possible use of melatonin as a natural safener in herbicide treatments. Existing studies have shown excellent co-acting qualities between both the following agents: herbicide and melatonin. The presence of melatonin reduces the damage caused by the herbicide in the crop and enhances the stress antioxidant response of plants. In this area, a similar role is suggested in the co-action between fungicides and melatonin, where a synergistic response has been demonstrated in some cases. The possible reduction in the fungicide doses is proposed as an eco-friendly advance in the use of these pesticides in certain crops. Finally, future research and applied actions of melatonin on these pest control agents are suggested.

Background: Circadian rhythm disruption (CRD) affects the expression levels of a range of biological clock genes, such as brain and muscle ARNT-Like-1 (BMAL1), which is considered to be an important factor in triggering or exacerbating inflammatory response. However, the underlying effect of CRD on the pathogenesis of apical periodontitis, a common oral inflammatory disease, currently remains unknown. Exploring the effects and pathogenic mechanisms of CRD on apical periodontitis will be beneficial in providing new ideas for the prevention and treatment of apical periodontitis.

Melatonin is synthesized in multiple tissues and organs of pigs, and existing studies have shown the presence of the melatonin-synthesizing enzyme ASMT protein. However, the genomic information for the gene has been lacking. The aim of this study was to locate the genomic information of the gene in pigs using comparative genomics analysis and then obtain the coding region information through molecular cloning.

As the global climate changes, high temperatures will cause heat stress, which significantly affects the productive efficiency of livestock. Currently, there is a lack of efficient methods to use in targeting this issue. In this study, we report that melatonin supplementation may represent an alternative method to reduce the negative impact of heat stress on livestock, particularly in Hainan black goats.

Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress is a crucial factor in the progression of obesity-related type 2 diabetes (diabesity), contributing to skeletal muscle (SKM) dysfunction, calcium imbalance, metabolic inflexibility, and muscle atrophy. The ER and mitochondria together regulate intracellular calcium levels, and melatonin, a natural compound with antioxidant properties, may alleviate these challenges. Our previous research showed that melatonin raises intracellular calcium and preserves muscle structure by enhancing mitochondrial function in obese diabetic rats.
