In this chapter we review the neuroethological approach correlating behavior and dorsal hippocampal activity recorded in rabbits in laboratory conditions or in a semi-natural enclosure and exposed to intra and interspecific confrontations. Behaviors of the same modality, i.e., immobility, and the same motivation, i.e., defense, can be distinguished by a different pattern of hippocampal activity, in terms of the relative ratio of RSA (rhythmic slow activity), and LIA (large amplitude irregular activity), and of RSA frequencies. In addition, the frequency and the duration of RSA episodes represent critical indicators of the amount of awareness during immobility conditions. The neural pattern is also differentially affected by dynamic (a live cat) and static (a stuffed sparrow hawk) stimuli. On a neuroethological basis, the hippocampal profile of TI, characterized by the prevalence of LIA, is similar to a sparrow-hawk exposure and to the submissive posture in a conspecific confrontation.

The current understanding of primate natural action organization derives from laboratory experiments in restrained contexts (RCs) under the assumption that this knowledge generalizes to freely moving contexts (FMCs). In this work, we developed a neurobehavioral platform to enable wireless recording of the same premotor neurons in both RCs and FMCs. Neurons often encoded the same hand and mouth actions differently in RCs and FMCs.

Through the lens of preclinical research on substance use disorders (SUD), I propose a reflection aimed at re-evaluating animal models in neuroscience, with a focus on ecological relevance. While rodent models have provided valuable insights into the neurobiology of SUD, the field currently faces a validation crisis, with findings often failing to translate into effective human treatments. Originally designed to address the lack of reproducibility in animal studies, the current global gold standard of rigorous standardization has led to increasingly controlled environments.

This commentary critiques Mougenot and Matheson's proposal to integrate embodied cognition with mechanistic explanations in cognitive neuroscience. We suggest more promising directions for embodied cognitive neuroscience, focusing on neuroethological research and evolutionary studies of nervous systems. These approaches, compatible with wide mechanistic explanations, offer a robust path forward by examining central nervous system function within whole organisms in their environments.

Learning and execution of complex motor skills are often modulated by sensory feedback and contextual cues arriving across multiple sensory modalities. Vocal motor behaviors, in particular, are primarily influenced by auditory inputs, both during learning and mature vocal production.
