Introduction: Although there are evidence-based strategies (EBSs) for alcohol and other drug (AOD) prevention and treatment for college students, there has been little focus on evaluating AOD EBS implementation in higher education. The use of implementation strategies in higher education may help bridge the gap between research and practice and improve students' access to EBSs. However, it is important to first understand determinants of AOD EBS program implementation to support AOD EBS selection and implementation strategy selection.

Impact of American College of surgeons trauma verification on statewide collaborative outcomes.

J Trauma Acute Care Surg

January 2025

From the Department of Surgery (E.M., L.G., J.S.), Emory University School of Medicine, Atlanta, Georgia; Georgia Trauma Commission (E.A., G.S.), Madison; Wellstar Medical College of Georgia, (R.M.) Medical College of Georgia Augusta University, Augusta; Grady Health System (S.T.), Atlanta; Memorial Health University Medical Center (J.D.), Savannah; Department of Surgery (D.A.), Atrium Health Navicent, Macon, Georgia.

Background: American College of Surgeons (ACS) trauma center verification has demonstrated improved outcomes at individual centers, but its impact on statewide Trauma Quality Improvement Program (TQIP) Collaboratives is unknown. A statewide TQIP Collaborative, founded in 2011, noted underperformance in six of eight patient cohorts identified in the TQIP Collaborative report. We hypothesized that requiring ACS verification for level I and II trauma centers would result in improved outcomes for the state collaborative.

Exploring Demographic Disparities in Private Well Water Testing in North Carolina.

Environ Sci Technol

January 2025

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Northeastern University, Boston, Massachusetts 02115, United States.

The natural, built, and social environments shape drinking water quality supplied by private wells. However, the combined effects of these factors are not well understood. Using North Carolina as a case study, we (i) estimate the demographic characteristics of the private well population; (ii) evaluate representation in well testing records; and (iii) demonstrate how spatial scale influences knowledge of well-using household demographics and representation in testing.

Objectives: Opioid-associated fatal and non-fatal overdose rates continue to rise. Prehospital overdose education and naloxone distribution (OEND) programs are attractive harm-reduction strategies, as patients who are not transported by EMS after receiving naloxone have limited access to other interventions. This narrative summary describes our experiences with prehospital implementation of evidence-based OEND practices across Ohio as part of the HEALing Communities Study (HCS).
