There is a global interest in the novel consumption, nutritional trends, and the market of new prebiotic sources and their potential functional impacts. Commercially available nutritional supplements based on microalgae that are approved to be edible by FDA, like (Cyanobacteria) and (Chlorophyta) become widely attractive. Microalgae are rich in carbohydrates, proteins, and polyunsaturated fatty acids that have high bioactivity. Recently, scientists are studying the microalgae polysaccharides (PS) or their derivatives (as dietary fibers) for their potential action as a novel prebiotic source for functional foods. Besides, the microalgae prebiotic polysaccharides are used for medication due to their antioxidant, anticancer, and antihypertensive bioactivities. This review provides an overview of microalgae prebiotics and other macromolecules' health benefits. The phytochemistry of various species as alternative future sources of novel polysaccharides were mentioned. The application as well as the production constraints and multidisciplinary approaches for evaluating microalgae phytochemistry were discussed. Additionally, the association between this potential of combining techniques like spectroscopic, chromatographic, and electrochemical analyses for microalgae sensation and analysis novelty compared to the chemical methods was emphasized.

Efficient nutrient recovery from source-separated urine is vital for wastewater treatment, with microalgae as a promising solution. However, bisphenol A (BPA) in urine can hinder microalgal resource recovery and pose water quality risks. The role of plant hormones in enhancing microalgal growth and pollutant removal is known, but their impact on BPA-laden urine treatment is not well-studied.

Prevalence of lipophilic phycotoxins with different forms in the benthic environments of a typical mariculture bay.

Key Laboratory of Marine Chemistry Theory and Technology, Ministry of Education, Ocean University of China, Qingdao, 266100, China.

Lipophilic phycotoxins (LPTs) are toxic and lipophilic secondary metabolites produced by toxic microalgae, which pose a serious threat to marine shellfish culture industries. LPTs were systematically investigated in bottom seawater, suspended particulate matter (SPM), sediment, and sediment porewater of Laizhou Bay, a typical mariculture bay in China, to understand the chemical diversity and environment behaviors of LPTs in the benthic environments. Okadaic acid (OA), pectenotoxin-2 (PTX2), dinophysistoxin-1 (DTX1), azaspiracid-2 (AZA2), gymnodimine (GYM), pectenotoxin-2 seco acid (PTX2 SA), 7-epi- pectenotoxin-2 seco acid (7-epi-PTX2 SA), 13-desmethylspirolide C (SPX1), yessotoxin (YTX) and homo YTX (h-YTX) were detected in the benthic environment of Laizhou Bay in spring, indicating that LPTs are rich in chemical diversity.

The lack of cost-effective nutrient sources and harvesting methods is currently a major obstacle to the production of sustainable biofuels from microalgae. In this study, Chlorella pyrenoidosa was cultured with saline wastewater in a stirred photobioreactor, and lipid-rich flocculent microalgae particles were successfully constructed. As the influent salinity of the photobioreactor increased from 0% to 3%, the particle size and sedimentation rate of flocculent microalgae particles gradually increased, and the lipid accumulation of microalgae also increased gradually.

The current work seeks to understand how the interactions between ZnO QDs and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) may vary based on the types of EPS (loosely and tightly bound) and modes of eco-corona formation (In-situ or ex-situ). In-situ eco-corona refers to formation of an EPS layer on the QDs during the interactions with the algae whereas the ex-situ condition refers to forming the layer before the interactions. ZnO QDs were added at 0.

Microplastics (MPs) are emerging pollutants that pose significant risks to ecosystems due to their inherent toxicity, capacity to accumulate various pollutants, and potential for synergistic impacts. Given these concerns, the focus of this research is on the critical need for effective MPs removal from aquatic environments. Using BBD method, this study aimed to identify the key parameters affecting the removal of MPs by algal biomass from aqueous solutions.
