Sr and Cs distribution in Chornobyl forests: 30 years after the nuclear accident.

J Environ Radioact

January 2025

Savannah River Ecology Laboratory, Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources, University of Georgia, Aiken, SC, USA.

The primary aim of this study was to quantify patterns in the distribution of Sr and Cs activity in pine (Pinus sylvestris L.: 18 sites) and birch (Betula pendula Roth.: 2 sites) forests within the Chornobyl exclusion zone, 30 years after the Chornobyl nuclear power plant (NPP) accident (1986).

Migration and risk assessment of heavy metals from swine manure in an organic fertilizer - soil - ryegrass - rex rabbit system: Based on field trials.

Sci Total Environ

January 2025

Lab of Animal Ecology and Environmental Control, College of Animal Science and Technology, Sichuan Agricultural University, Chengdu 611130, PR China; State Key Laboratory of Swine and Poultry Breeding Industry, College of Animal Science and Technology, Sichuan Agricultural University, PR China. Electronic address:

Organic fertilizers were produced through maggot-composting (MC) and natural composting (NC) using swine manure, and the migration, contamination, and health risks of heavy metals (Zn, Cu, Cd, Cr, Pb) were evaluated within a fertilizer - soil - ryegrass - Rex rabbit system. After 70 days of treatment, heavy metals were concentrated by 43.23 % to 100 % in MC and 52.

Modern African ungulates navigate seasonal variation in resource availability through diet-switching (primarily mixed-feeders) and/or migrating (primarily grass grazers). These ecological generalisations are well-documented today, but the extent to which they apply to the non-analog ecosystems of the Pleistocene are unclear. Drawing from serially-sampled stable isotope measurements from 18 Kenyan large herbivore species from the Last Glacial Period (LGP), we evaluate how diet, diet-switching, and migration compare to observations from present-day settings.

Inhibition of human tumor cell migration by a rice-derived chimeric cysteine protease inhibitor.

An Acad Bras Cienc

December 2024

Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul - UFRGS, Programa de Pós-Graduação em Biologia Celular e Molecular - PPGBCM, Centro de Biotecnologia, Av. Bento Gonçalves, 9500, Agronomia, 90650-001 Porto Alegre, RS, Brazil.

Article Synopsis
  • The cystatin superfamily is vital for inhibiting cysteine proteases, which are involved in important biological functions like seed development and disease resistance in plants, and tumor progression in humans.
  • A novel rice-derived chimeric legumain inhibitor was evaluated through simulations and laboratory tests, showing strong stability and affinity for the legumain enzyme.
  • The study indicates that the chimeric Oryzacystatin I mutant could be a valuable candidate for developing new cancer treatments due to its effectiveness in reducing tumor cell migration and viability.
