There is an urgent need for a rapid, affordable and sensitive analytical method for periodic monitoring of heavy metals in water bodies. Herein, we report for the first time a versatile method for ultratrace level metal detection based on colorimetric sensing. The method integrates preconcentration using a nanomaterial with a colorimetric assay performed directly on the metal-enriched nanomaterial surface. This method circumvents the need for tedious sample pre-processing steps and the complex development of colorimetric probes, thereby reducing the complexity of the analytical procedure. The efficacy of the proposed method was demonstrated for chromium(VI) ions detection in water samples. Amine functionalized mesoporous silica (AMS) obtained from a one-pot synthesis was utilized as a pre-concentration material. The structural and chemical analysis of AMS was conducted to confirm its physico-chemical properties. The pre-concentration conditions were optimized to maximise the colorimetric signal. AMS exhibited a discernible colour change from white to purple (visible to the naked eye) for trace Cr(VI) ions concentration as low as 0.5 μg L. This method shows high selectivity for Cr(VI) ions with no colorimetric signal from other metal ions. We believe our method of analysis has a high scope for de-centralized monitoring of organic/inorganic pollutants in resource-constrained settings.

Nitrogen-doped porous hydrochar (NPHC) was successfully synthesized by hydrothermal carbonization and activation with KHCO, which was employed for scavenging hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) and bisphenol A (BPA) in contaminated water. N doping increased the unique active sites such as amino and molecular N in NPHC for adsorbing contaminants, and enhanced the activation effect. Compared to original (HC) and N-doped hydrochar (NHC), the S of material improved from 3.

This study investigates the synthesis and characterization of alkyne-based multilayered three-dimensional (3D) polymers, which exhibit a subtle aggregation-induced emission (AIE) phenomenon. The polymers demonstrate significant potential as fluorescent probes for the selective detection of chromium (VI) ions (Cr⁺), showcasing their utility in environmental sensing applications. Additionally, the circular dichroism (CD) spectra reveal a pronounced cotton effect, indicative of chiral properties, while scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and dynamic light scatting (DLS) analysis reveal a distinctive rock-like surface morphology and Cr sensitive anti-aggregation.

Current strategies primarily utilize heterotrophic or mixotrophic bioreduction for the simultaneous removal of Cr(VI) and NO from groundwater. However, given the oligotrophic nature of groundwater, autotrophic bioreduction could be more appropriate, though it remains notably underdeveloped. Here, an autotrophic bioreduction technology utilizing biochar (BC)-assisted zero valent iron (ZVI) is proposed.

Article Synopsis
  • - Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) is a serious health and environmental hazard, particularly in industrial areas, and this study explores the use of modified graphene oxide (GO) as an effective adsorbent to tackle this issue.
  • - The synthesized adsorbent, GO/ATA, significantly improves adsorptive properties due to the attachment of a Schiff base, showcasing a high capacity of 243.3 mg/g for Cr(VI) removal at 298 K through electrostatic interactions and reduction reactions.
  • - GO/ATA demonstrates excellent recyclability, maintaining around 72.7% of its initial adsorption capacity after five cycles, confirming its practical use for remediating Cr(VI)-contaminated water and its potential

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have recently received a lot of interest for their use in adsorbing and eliminating hexavalent chromium from water. Obtaining low-cost, biocompatible, and environmentally friendly MOFs for research in this field is vital. One very stable three-dimensional UiO-66-Ce(IV) MOF, , was synthesized with a high yield using an amino acid ligand, DL-aspartic acid.
