Hydroxyapatite (HA) had the effect of maintaining the pH balance of the reaction system and promoting enzyme activity. In this work, hydroxyapatite was synthesized by coprecipitation and characterized for biohydrogen (bioH) production from glucose. The highest bioH yield obtained was 182.33 ± 2.41 mL/g glucose, amended with an optimal dosage of 400 mg/L HA, which was a 55.80% higher bioH yield compared with the control group without any addition. The results indicated that HA facilitated the deterioration of organic substances and increased the concentration of soluble microbial products (SMPs). Microbial community analysis revealed that HA significantly increased the abundance of from 35.27% (0 mg/L, HA) to 76.41% (400 mg/L, HA), which played an essential role in bioH generation. In particular, the abundance of increased from 15.33% (0 mg/L HA) to 45.17% (400 mg/L HA) and became the dominant bacteria. The results also indicated that HA likely improves bioH production from organic wastewater in practice.

Development of neutralizing monoclonal antibody (nAb) is a strategy for treatment of infections caused by SARS-CoV-2. This study evaluated the pharmacokinetics (PK) and pharmacodynamics (PD) of HFB30132A, a fully human nAb targeting SARS-CoV-2 spike protein receptor binding domain, in healthy subjects. Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled phase I trial was performed in healthy Chinese and US subjects, respectively.

Evaluation of anion exchange resin for sorption of selenium (IV) from aqueous solutions.

BMC Chem

January 2025

Nuclear Chemistry Department, Hot Laboratories Center, Egyptian Atomic Energy Authority, P.O. 13759, Cairo, Egypt.

In this work, selenium (IV) ions were adsorbed from aqueous solutions by the strongly basic anion exchange resin Amberlite IRA-400. The morphology of the resin before and after Se(IV) sorption was investigated using different techniques such as energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). To determine the ideal sorption conditions, a batch approach was used to examine the variables affecting Se(IV) sorption performance, including pH, shaking time, adsorbent dosage, initial metal ion concentration, and temperature.

Perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) is one of the most investigated Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) for being the strongest compound to eliminate and having adverse health concerns. In this work, we have conducted the sonochemical treatment of PFOS simulated water under high (500 kHz) and low (22 kHz) frequencies while monitoring the operational parameters via an integrated sonochemical system. The integrated advanced sonochemical system includes software to monitor treatment power, solution temperature and frequency while allowing distinctive control of the reaction conditions.

December 2024

Key Laboratory of Precision Nutrition and Food Quality, Department of Nutrition and Health, China Agricultural University, No. 17 Tsinghua East Road, Haidian District, Beijing 100083, China.

The key role of enzymatic hydrolysis and fermentation in the sensory quality of set yogurt made from whole oats was demonstrated. The optimal process was established by the orthogonal and response surface methodology based on the acidity, textural, and rheological properties. The results indicated that the enzymatic hydrolysis appropriately consisted of liquefaction with 12 U/mL α-amylase at 70 °C and pH 6.
