It is widely believed that biochar plays an essential role in sequestrating pollutants. The impacts of biochar on microbial growth, and consequently on the environmental fate of pollutants, however, remains poorly understood. In this study, wheat-straw-derived biochar was used to investigate how biochar amendment affected MR-1 growth and roxarsone transformation in water under anaerobic conditions. Three biochar with different physicochemical properties were used to mediate the roxarsone degradation. The results showed that the degradation rate of roxarsone could be accelerated by the increase of biochar pyrolysis temperature. From the characterization of biochar, the total specific surface area, micropore surface area and micropore volume of biochar increase, but the average pore diameter decreases as the pyrolysis temperature increases. Through infrared spectroscopy analysis, it was found that as the pyrolysis temperature increases, the degree of condensation of biochar increases, thereby increasing the pollutant removal rate. From the changes of the relative concentration of MR-1 and its secreted extracellular polymer content, the growth promotion ability of biochar also increases as the pyrolysis temperature increases. These results suggest that wheat-straw-derived biochar may be an important agent for activating microbial growth and can be used to accelerate the transformation of roxarsone, which could be a novel strategy for roxarsone remediation.

The rational design of advanced oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts is essential to improve the performance of energy conversion devices. However, it remains a huge challenge to construct hierarchical micro-/meso-/macroporous nanostructures, especially mesoporous transport channels in catalysts, to enhance catalytic capability. Herein, motivated by the characteristics of energetic metal-organic frameworks (EMOFs) that produce an abundance of gases during high-temperature pyrolysis, we prepared a unique tetrazine-based EMOF-derived electrocatalyst (denoted as FeC@NSC-900) consisting of highly dispersed FeC nanoparticles and N,S-codoped mesoporous carbon nanotubes.

Phase evolutions of sodium layered oxide cathodes during thermal fluctuations.

Chem Commun (Camb)

January 2025

College of Chemistry and Materials Engineering, Wenzhou University, Wenzhou 325035, China.

Layered transition metal oxide (NaTMO) cathodes are considered highly appropriate for the practical applications of sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) owing to their facile synthesis and high theoretical capacity. Generally, the phase evolution behaviors of NaTMO during solid-state reactions at high temperature closely related to their carbon footprint, prime cost, and the eventual electrochemical properties, while the thermal stability in various desodiated states associated with wide temperature fluctuations are extremely prominent to the electrochemical properties and safety of SIB devices. Therefore, in this review, the influences of sintering conditions such as pyrolysis temperature, soaking time, and cooling rates on the phase formation patterns of NaTMO are summarized.

Phosphorus (P) plays an essential role for plant growth, but conventional P sources used in agriculture are finite and non-renewable. As a result, there is a growing need to explore alternative P sources such as sewage sludge (SS) - a P-rich solid waste and valuable renewable resource that is often mismanaged globally. Pyrolysis is a promising technique for managing SS.

Chitosan (CH)-based composite films have attracted increasing attention as promising green food packaging materials due to their biodegradability and ease of fabrication. Additionally, lignin (LN) has been widely used as additive for chitosan-based films to improve their physicochemical properties. In this study, a series of composite films made of chitosan nanoparticles (NCH) as a matrix and alkali lignin nanoparticles (LNPs) as functional filler were prepared.

Article Synopsis
  • The pyrolysis coking of hydrocarbon fuels during cooling affects engine performance, and introducing a passivation layer with a high aspect ratio is a promising strategy.
  • A dense hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) film was deposited on nickel using chemical vapor deposition (CVD) as an effective anti-coking coating.
  • The study showcased that the hBN coating significantly inhibits coking by achieving coking inhibition rates of over 83% at various temperatures, highlighting its potential for improving engine reliability.
