Individuals experiencing body dissatisfaction have poorer health outcomes in part due to engaging in less physical activity. Body appreciation is protective of health behaviors and proposed to be conceptually different from body dissatisfaction. Two studies evaluated whether body appreciation and dissatisfaction represented two distinct dimensions, and whether body appreciation and dissatisfaction would interact in their effect on activity-related motivation and behavior. Study 1 ( 313) was prospective and utilized a self-report measure of physical activity whereas Study 2 ( 123) was prospective and used an objective measure. All hypotheses and analyses were pre-registered. A multiverse approach was taken to demonstrate the robustness of results. In exploratory factor analyses, body appreciation and dissatisfaction did not represent two distinct dimensions of body image as both loaded onto the same factor. This result was largely supported by latent profile analyses, which revealed that participants scored high, moderate, or low on both body satisfaction and appreciation. Additionally, body appreciation did not buffer the negative impact of body dissatisfaction on activity-related motivation and behavior. This study provides the first statistical evaluation of the theoretical proposition that body appreciation and dissatisfaction may be distinct constructs with distinct relationships to outcomes.

Article Synopsis
  • The Functionality Appreciation Scale (FAS) measures how much individuals appreciate their body's abilities, with a focus on validating the French version through three studies.
  • Study 1 involved 383 young women and found good reliability and validity, while also confirming a single-factor structure.
  • Study 2 and 3 confirmed this structure through further analyses in diverse groups, reinforcing the scale's consistency and supportive findings across both genders, solidifying its use for French populations.

Current biomedical titanium alloys have been repurposed from other industries, which has contributed to several biologically driven implant failure mechanisms. This review highlights the added value that may be gained by building an appreciation of implant biological responses at the onset of alloy design. Specifically, the fundamental mechanisms associated with immune response, angiogenesis, osseointegration and the potential threat of infection are discussed, including how elemental selection can modulate these pivotal systems.

Two waves of data were collected from a sample of 915 high school students in Flanders (T1: 60% female; M = 16.

Background: Two facets of positive body image, body appreciation and functionality appreciation, are positively associated with an adaptive eating style known as intuitive eating. Little is known about the mechanisms underlying the association between positive body image and intuitive eating, although it is well established that weight bias internalization is associated with unfavorable views of the self and body and interferes with health behavior engagement.

Objective: The present cross-sectional study examined weight bias internalization as a statistical mediator of the association between positive body image (i.
