Vitamin D status and its determinants in German elite athletes.

Eur J Appl Physiol

January 2025

Department of Exercise Physiology and Sports Therapy, Institute of Sports Science, Justus Liebig University Giessen, Kugelberg 62, 35394, Giessen, Germany.

Purpose: This study investigated elite German athletes to (1) assess their serum 25(OH)D levels and the prevalence of insufficiency, (2) identify key factors influencing serum 25(OH)D levels, and (3) analyze the association between serum 25(OH)D levels and handgrip strength.

Methods: In this cross-sectional study, a total of 474 athletes (231 female), aged 13-39 years (mean 19.3 years), from ten Olympic disciplines were included.

Article Synopsis
  • This study compares the Artec Leo hand-held scanner and the iPad Pro for 3D body surface scanning, focusing on capturing data related to 'dropped head syndrome' in cervical and craniofacial areas.
  • Eighteen volunteers were tested multiple times with both devices, measuring surface area, scanning time, and participant comfort to assess precision, accuracy, and reliability through various metrics.
  • Results showed no significant differences in overall scanning precision or time, with both devices achieving high accuracy levels under 5%, but the iPad Pro was noted as a effective alternative for clinical use in head and neck assessments.

Correctly using hand-held tools and manipulable objects typically relies not only on sensory and motor-related processes, but also centrally on conceptual knowledge about how objects are typically used (e.g. grasping the handle of a kitchen knife rather than the blade avoids injury).

Visible diffuse reflectance smartphone spectrometer with high spectral accuracy.

Spectrochim Acta A Mol Biomol Spectrosc

February 2025

Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Khulna University of Engineering & Technology, Khulna 9203, Bangladesh. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • A smartphone-based spectrometer is designed for analyzing solid samples using diffuse reflection, featuring a thin-film grating and a diffuse surface to capture light.
  • The device simplifies optical setup by directly using a smartphone's CMOS camera to capture light without needing complex optics, achieving a maximum wavelength resolution of 0.08 nm/pixel within a spectrum of 400-700 nm.
  • It successfully identifies food color pigments and detects possible food adulteration, offering a compact, affordable (around $50), and portable solution for on-site testing.

Design and Analysis of a Hand-Held Surgical Forceps with a Force-Holding Function.

Sensors (Basel)

September 2024

Changchun Institute of Optics, Fine Mechanics and Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Changchun 130033, China.

Physiological hand tremors, twitching, and the nonlinear characteristics of the relationship between surgical forceps clamping force and operating force seriously affect the clamping accuracy of surgical instruments. To address this problem, a new type of surgical forceps with a force-holding function was developed to replace traditional forceps, which was studied in terms of structural design, statics, and dynamics. The overall structure of the surgical forceps was designed based on the lever principle, the kinematic model of the clamping part of the surgical forceps was established by the geometrical method, and the correctness of the kinematic model was verified by ADAMS.
