Developing a biorefinery process for a highly integrated valorization and fractionation of lignocellulose is crucial for its utilization. Herein, a biphasic system comprising choline chloride/lactic acid and 2-methyltetrahydrofuran with Al(SO) and HSO as catalysts was applied to pretreat Eucalyptus. Results showed that under the optimized conditions (150 °C, 30 min, 0.2 M Al(SO), 0.075 M HSO), the furfural yield and enzymatic hydrolysis efficiency could reach 54.7% and 97.0%, respectively. The efficient cellulose conversion was attributed to remarkable removal of lignin (91.0%) and hemicelluloses (100.0%), thereby causing the disruption of cell wall structure and enhancement of cellulose accessibility. Meanwhile, confocal Raman microscope and atomic force microscope displayed that the pretreatment resulted in the decreasing intensities of carbohydrates and lignin different regions of cell walls, and exposing of the embedded microfibers from noncellulosic polymers. Overall, the deep eutectic solvent-based biphasic system displayed high performance for effective utilization of carbohydrate components in lignocellulose.

Psoriasis is a prevalent relapsing dermatological condition that often necessitates lifelong treatment. The distinctive thickening of the stratum corneum presents a challenge to drug penetration. The employment of microneedles has been demonstrated to enhance the transdermal drug delivery efficacy by creating multiple microchannels in the skin.

The ocular nanoemulsions (NE) are biphasic systems mainly composed of oil and water emulsified by surfactants/cosurfactants. The extensive surface area of ocular NE enhances corneal contact, leading to improved drug penetration and making it a preferable delivery system. They can also increase the solubility of drugs across the ocular barrier with improved residence time.

Coacervation is generally treated as a liquid-liquid phase separation process and is controlled mainly by thermodynamics. However, kinetics could make a dominant contribution, especially in systems containing multiple interactions. In this work, using peptides of (XXLY)SSSGSS to tune the charge density and the degree of hydrophobicity, as well as to introduce secondary structures, we evaluated the effect of kinetics on biphasic coacervates formed by peptides with single-stranded oligonucleotides and quaternized dextran at varying pH values.

Low-loss microwave dielectrics are of significant importance for the miniaturization and integration of microwave devices. In this paper, the ceramics of nominal composition MgTiO ( = 3-6) are synthesized, and the correlations among their phase compositions, defect behaviors, and microwave dielectric properties are systematically investigated. The analyses indicate that the MgTiO ceramics are a biphasic system consisting of hexagonal ilmenite-structured MgTiO and cubic spinel-structured MgTiO.
