Background: One of the best ways to impart important skills to trainees is through simulation-based training, which is more reliable than the conventional clinical examination method. It is used in pediatric nursing training to allow nurses to practice and improve their clinical and conversational skills during an actual child encounter. A heel-prick is a complex psychomotor task that requires skill and knowledge from the pediatric nurse performing the procedure while applying for the National Newborn Screening Program.

This case highlights that refractory pancytopenia leading to death can occur with methimazole treatment even at a very low cumulative dose and after a very short duration of exposure. In addition, the standard treatments to correct the pancytopenia may not be effective and a bone marrow transplant may be required. Current American Thyroid Association guidelines do not recommend routine monitoring of the complete blood count in patients receiving thionamides because of the rapidity of the onset of agranulocytosis and the lack of positive evidence that such monitoring would be useful.

Department of Population and Public Health Sciences, Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California, Los Angeles, CA; Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center, University of Southern California, Los Angeles, CA; Center for Genetic Epidemiology, Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California, Los Angeles, CA.

Excessive alcohol consumption is a significant public health concern and contributes to liver diseases and cancer. Modifiable lifestyle factors including alcohol consumption can influence circulating microRNAs (miRNAs), which are increasingly used as biomarkers for early disease detection. Yet limited studies have identified miRNAs associated with alcohol intake, particularly in multiethnic populations.

Prenatal gene editing for neurodevelopmental diseases: Ethical considerations.

Am J Hum Genet

January 2025

Department of Social Medicine and Center for Bioethics, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Chapel Hill, NC, USA.

Neurodevelopmental diseases (NDDs) are notoriously difficult to treat because clinical symptoms stem from developmental processes that begin before birth. Prenatal gene editing could fill the treatment gap for NDDs by targeting and permanently correcting the genetic variants that underlie these pathogenic developmental processes. At the same time, there is a risk of unintended edits to the fetus or the pregnant person that could result in serious adverse consequences that are difficult, if not impossible, to undo.

Introduction: Breast surgeries are classified as clean procedures associated with a lower risk of post-operative infections; however, the reported infection rates post-breast surgeries are still significantly high. Surgical site infections (SSIs) are indeed one of the most common and serious complications following breast surgery.

Methodology: A retrospective study assessed the rate of SSIs post-breast reconstructive surgery after the implementation of the infection control protocol at James Cook University Hospital and Friarage Hospital from December 2022 to June 2024.
