In this paper, the wavelength current tuning characteristics of high-temperature-operation single-mode vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) for chip-scale atomic sensing systems are studied. Excellent wavelength current tuning robustness is helpful to improve the stability of atomic sensing systems. By optimizing the size of the oxide aperture combined with surface relief mode control technology, the single-mode VCSEL with an 8 µm oxide aperture can achieve 2.02 mW output power at 355 K, and the wavelength current tuning coefficient is ∼0.25/. This excellent wavelength current tuning robustness results from the low active current density and device heat generation due to the optimized oxide aperture size.

Silicon photonics is a rapidly developing technology that promises to revolutionize the way we communicate, compute and sense the world. However, the lack of highly scalable, native complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS)-integrated light sources is one of the main factors hampering its widespread adoption. Despite considerable progress in hybrid and heterogeneous integration of III-V light sources on silicon, monolithic integration by direct epitaxy of III-V materials remains the pinnacle of cost-effective on-chip light sources.

The exposure of the general population to artificial light at night has dramatically increased in recent decades. Current standards for domestic lighting are based on acute exposure to light and consider blue wavelengths to be responsible for phototoxicity. However, meta-analyses pointed out the role of lifelong light exposure in the onset of age-related macular degeneration, suggesting a cumulative effect of light exposure.

Even though efficient near-infrared (NIR) detection is critical for numerous applications, state-of-the-art NIR detectors either suffer from limited capability of detecting incoming photons, i.e., have poor spectral responsivity, or are made of expensive group III-V non-CMOS compatible materials.

Aqueous-phase phosphors are of utmost importance for a myriad of applications. However, the emission wavelengths of the current aqueous organic room-temperature phosphorescent (RTP) materials are limited to green and red bands, while the blue part is rarely reported, thus limiting the development of a full-color RTP system. Theoretically, carboxylated benzene is expected to be blue phosphorescence-emissive, but only green phosphorescence is observed in solid, due to the strong intermolecular π-π stacking that decreases the energy gap.
