For heterogeneous catalysts, the active sites exposed on the surface have been investigated intensively, yet the effect of the subsurface-underlying atoms is much less scrutinized. Here, a surface-engineering strategy to dope Ru into the subsurface/surface of Co matrix is reported, which alters the electronic structure and lattice strain of the catalyst surface. Using hydrogen evolution (HER) as a model reaction, it is found that the subsurface doping Ru can optimize the hydrogen adsorption energy and improve the catalytic performance, with overpotentials of 28 and 45 mV at 10 mA cm in alkaline and acidic media, respectively, and in particular, 28 mV in neutral electrolyte. The experimental results and theoretical calculations indicate that the subsurface/surface doping Ru improves the HER efficiency in terms of both thermodynamics and kinetics. The approach here stands as an effective strategy for catalyst design via subsurface engineering at the atomic level.

Developing an innovative metal-phosphorus heterostructure as an excellent electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is crucial for achieving large-scale water electrolysis, although it remains challenging. Herein, we introduce a pioneering strategy entailing the coordination of two metal phosphides in a catalytic structure by employing a wide variety of catalytically active species and regulating the electronic structure. As a novel carbon-based material with two-dimensional (2D) characteristics, graphdiyne (GDY) shows great potential in constructing active catalytic sites due to its distinctive atomic configuration and sp/sp conjugated hybrid two-dimensional networks. In this study, the layered GDY was synthesized using the ball milling method, and ZnCdS/Graphdiyne/NiO (ZnCdS/GDY/NiO) composite was synthesized by in-situ composite and physical mixing method. The prepared ZnCdS/GDY/NiO has good photostability outstanding performance in photocatalytic hydrogen production.

Developing highly efficient non-iridium-based active sites for acidic water splitting is still a huge challenge. Herein, unique Ru-B-Cr moieties have been constructed in RuO nanofibers (NFs) to activate Ru sites for water electrolysis, which overcomes the bottleneck of RuO-based catalysts usually possessing low activity for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and poor stability for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The fabricated Cr, B-doped RuO NFs exhibit low overpotentials of 205 and 379 mV for acidic HER and OER at 1 A cm with outstanding stability lasting 1000 and 188 h, respectively.

The active site density, intrinsic activity, and supporting substrate of cobalt phosphide catalysts are vital to their performance in alkaline water electrolysis. In this work, a CoP/CoP loaded on cellulose nanofiber-derived carbon aerogels (CP/CCAs) bifunctional electrocatalyst with a three-dimensional network and heterostructure is illustrated through sequential facile hydrothermal, freeze-drying, and phosphorylation processes. The three-dimensional network of carbon aerogels derived from cellulose nanofibers reveals a specific surface area of 183.
