We have investigated the gas-phase fragmentation reactions of 11 synthetic 4-aryl-3,4-dihydrocoumarins by electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (ESI-MS/MS) on a quadrupole-time-of flight (Q-TOF) hybrid mass spectrometer. We have also estimated thermochemical data for the protonated coumarins (precursor ion A) and product ion structures by computational chemistry at a B3LYP level of theory to establish the ion structures and to rationalize the fragmentation pathways. The most abundant ions in the product ion spectra of coumarins 1-11 resulted from CHO, CO, CHO, CHO, CHO, and CHOH eliminations through retro-Diels-Alder (RDA) reactions, remote hydrogen rearrangements (β-eliminations), and β-lactone ring contraction.

The tropylium ion is a non-benzenoid aromatic species that works as a catalyst. This chemical entity brings about a large number of organic transformations, such as hydroboration reactions, ring contraction, the trapping of enolates, oxidative functionalization, metathesis, insertion, acetalization, and trans-acetalization reactions. The tropylium ion also functions as a coupling reagent in synthetic reactions.

Unlike the inertness of bulk water, water microdroplets exhibit some remarkable reactivities. We report that water microdroplets can directly produce stable CH cations (a combination of benzylic and tropylium cations) from toluene and other substrates at room temperature with a positive voltage (+4 kV) applied to the droplet spray source. The CH cation and the benzyl radical (CHCH·) are both generated via hydroxyl radicals at the water-gas interface of the microdroplets.

Closo-carborane anions are prominent, whereas the cations of the same are less abundant in the literature. As these ions have similar size and are weakly coordinating, the ionic liquids of these two ions could have important applications in many areas of chemistry.
