In Austria, only fragmented information on the occurrence of alien and potentially invasive mosquito species exists. The aim of this study is a nationwide overview on the situation of those mosquitoes in Austria. Using a nationwide uniform protocol for the first time, mosquito eggs were sampled with ovitraps at 45 locations in Austria at weekly intervals from May to October 2020. The sampled eggs were counted and the species were identified by genetic analysis. The Asian tiger mosquito was found at two sites, once in Tyrol, where this species has been reported before, and for the first time in the province of Lower Austria, at a motorway rest stop. The Asian bush mosquito was widespread in Austria. It was found in all provinces and was the most abundant species in the ovitraps by far. was more abundant in the South than in the North and more eggs were found in habitats with artificial surfaces than in (semi-) natural areas. Further, the number of eggs increased with higher ambient temperature and decreased with higher wind speed. The results of this study will contribute to a better estimation of the risk of mosquito-borne disease in Austria and will be a useful baseline for a future documentation of changes in the distribution of those species.

Analyses of mosquito-borne virus outbreaks have revealed the presence of similar virus strains over several years. However, it remains unclear how mosquito-borne viruses can persist over winter, when conditions are generally unfavorable for virus circulation. One potential route for virus persistence is via diapausing mosquitoes.

parasites have a complex life cycle that transitions between mosquito and mammalian hosts, and undergo continuous cellular remodeling to adapt to various drastic environments. Following hepatocyte invasion, the parasite discards superfluous organelles for intracellular replication, and the remnant organelles undergo extensive branching and mature into hepatic merozoites. Autophagy is a ubiquitous eukaryotic process that permits the recycling of intracellular components.

Background: The high burden of malaria in Africa is largely due to the presence of competent and adapted Anopheles vector species. With invasive Anopheles stephensi implicated in malaria outbreaks in Africa, understanding the genomic basis of vector-parasite compatibility is essential for assessing the risk of future outbreaks due to this mosquito. Vector compatibility with P.

Competition between mosquito species during the larval phase is a well-established mechanism structuring container mosquito communities, with invasive species often outperforming natives. We assessed the competitive outcome between 2 species that occur on the island of Puerto Rico, the historic invasive Aedes aegypti (L.) and the endemic Aedes mediovittatus (Coquillett) (Diptera: Culicidae).

Culex pipiens is an invasive mosquito found in temperate regions globally. It is considered among the most important disease vectors worldwide and is responsible for the transmission of a range of pathogens, including West Nile virus, avian malaria, Saint Louis encephalitis, and filarial worms. Throughout its northern temperate range, this mosquito is found in 2 ecotypes: form pipiens and form molestus.
