Intrathecal immunoglobulin A (IgA) synthesis in multiple sclerosis (MS) has long earned little attention, despite a potential significance in disease pathogenesis and prognosis. The presence of IgA-positive plasma cells in MS lesions and along damaged axons suggests a role in disease pathogenesis. Available clinical evidence about a potential positive or negative prognostic role is scarce and inconclusive.

Immunoglobulin A (IgA) vasculitis (IgAV), classically known as Henoch-Schönlein purpura (HSP), is a type of nonthrombocytopenic small-vessel vasculitis. HSP is the most frequent kind of systemic vasculitis in children, characterized by purpura, arthritis or arthralgia, gastrointestinal pain, and kidney dysfunction. The aim of our research was to investigate and observe the clinical characteristics of children diagnosed with HSP and to explore the correlation between infectious diseases and HSP.

Breast milk delivery of an engineered dimeric IgA protects neonates against rotavirus.

Mucosal Immunol

January 2025

Weill Cornell Medicine Department of Pediatrics, Division of Infectious Disease, New York, NY, USA. Electronic address:

Dimeric IgA (dIgA) is the dominant antibody in many mucosal tissues. It is actively transported onto mucosal surfaces as secretory IgA (sIgA) which plays an integral role in protection against enteric pathogens, particularly in young children. Therapeutic strategies that deliver engineered, potently neutralizing antibodies directly into the infant intestine through breast milk could provide enhanced antimicrobial protection for neonates.

Antibodies and Inflammation: Fecal Biomarkers of Gut Health in Domestic Ruminants.

J Exp Zool A Ecol Integr Physiol

January 2025

Department of Earth and Environmental Science, School of Natural Sciences, Faculty of Science and Engineering, The University of Manchester, Manchester, UK.

Gastrointestinal infections present major challenges to ruminant livestock systems, and gut health is a key constraint on fitness, welfare, and productivity. Fecal biomarkers present opportunities to monitor animal health without using invasive methods, and with greater resolution compared to observational metrics. Here we developed enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays for three potential fecal biomarkers of gut health in domestic ruminants: two immunological (total immunoglobulin [Ig]A and total IgG) and one inflammatory (lactoferrin).

Fucoidan from Apostichopus japonicus enhances intestinal barrier function and promotes intestinal immunity via regulating the gut microbiota and tryptophan metabolism.

Int J Biol Macromol

January 2025

State Key Laboratory of Marine Food Processing & Safety Control, College of Food Science and Engineering, Ocean University of China, Qingdao, China. Electronic address:

Apostichopus japonicus is one of the most popular types of sea cucumber among consumers in Southeast Asia. Fucoidan from Apostichopus japonicus (Aj-FUC) has attracted considerable attention because of its immunomodulatory activities. Aj-FUC is indigestible in the human upper gastrointestinal tract but can be utilized by the gut microbiota.
