Proteorhodopsin (PR) is a photoactive proton pump found in marine bacteria. There are two phenotypes of PR exhibiting an environmental adaptation to the ocean's depth which tunes their maximum absorption: blue-absorbing proteorhodopsin (BPR) and green-absorbing proteorhodopsin (GPR). This blue/green color-shift is controlled by a glutamine to leucine substitution at position 105 which accounts for a 20 nm shift. Typically, spectral tuning in rhodopsins is rationalized by the external point charge model but the Q105L mutation is charge neutral. To study this tuning mechanism, we employed the hybrid QM/MM method with sampling from molecular dynamics. Our results reveal that the positive partial charge of glutamine near the C -C bond of retinal shortens the effective conjugation length of the chromophore compared to the leucine residue. The derived mechanism can be applied to explain the color regulation in other retinal proteins and can serve as a guideline for rational design of spectral shifts.

Aftershocks can cause additional damage or even lead to the collapse of structures already weakened by a mainshock. Scarcity of in-situ recorded aftershock accelerograms heightens the need to develop synthetic aftershock ground motions. These synthesized motions are crucial for assessing the cumulative seismic demand on structures subjected to mainshock-aftershock sequences.

As a natural oil, horse oil has unique biological activity ingredients and therapeutic characteristics, which has important application value and market potential in healthcare, food, skin care and other fields. However, fraud is rampant in the horse oil market, and traditional methods such as chemical analysis and physical property detection are time-consuming, costly, and have low accuracy in detecting adulteration. Excessive adulteration may cause health risks, skin problems, and economic losses.

Germanium (Ge) colloidal quantum dots (CQDs) were synthesized by thermal decomposition of GeI using capping ligand mixtures of oleylamine (OAm), octadecene (ODE), and trioctylphosphine (TOP). Average diameters could be tuned across a wide range, from 3 to 18 nm, by adjusting reactant concentrations, heating rates, and reaction temperatures. OAm promotes decomposition of GeI to Ge and serves as a weakly bound capping ligand.

Supercontinuum generation in optical fiber involves complex nonlinear dynamics, making optimization challenging, and typically relying on trial-and-error or extensive numerical simulations. Machine learning and metaheuristic algorithms offer more efficient optimization approaches. We report here an experimental study of supercontinuum spectral shaping by tuning the phase of the input pulses, different optimization approaches including a genetic algorithm, particle swarm optimizer, and simulated annealing.
