Two novel top mirror designs of high contrast gratings (HCG) are used as the top mirrors of the resonant-cavity enhanced photodetector (RCE PD) operating at 940 nm. The bottom mirror is composed of 36-pair AlAs/GaAs, while the top mirror is a thin-layer grating providing reflectivity higher than 99%. With grating periods varying from 450 to 490 nm, different designs with FWHM of about 0.2∼3 nm are attained. A broadband HCG as top reflector can result in significantly improved manufacturing cost, as well as near unity quantum efficiency (QE). A resonator HCG can result in a new splitting responsivity spectrum with on-off ratio of 14 dB, which has the potential to serve as the basic elements of ternary system, polarization dichroism or diattenuation, and optical switch.

Herbivorous insects need to cope with changing host plant biochemistry caused by abiotic and biotic impacts, to meet their dietary requirements. Larvae of the multivoltine European grapevine moth Lobesia botrana, one of the main insect pests in viticulture, feed on both flowers and berries. The nutritional value and defence compounds of these organs are changing with plant phenology and are affected by climate change which may accordingly alter plant-insect interactions.

The MEMS scanning micromirror requires angle sensors to provide real-time angle feedback during operation, ensuring a stable and accurate deflection of the micromirror. We model an adaptive agent-based environment using selfish algorithm agents (SA-agents) that make decisions along three choice dimensions as they play the multi-round prisoner's dilemma game. The dynamics that emerge from mutual interactions among the SA-agents exhibit two collective-level properties that mirror living systems, thus making these models suitable for societal/biological simulation.
