We propose a method to jointly super-resolve an anisotropic image volume along with its corresponding voxel labels without external training data. Our method is inspired by internally trained superresolution, or self-super-resolution (SSR) techniques that target anisotropic, low-resolution (LR) magnetic resonance (MR) images. While resulting images from such methods are quite useful, their corresponding LR labels-derived from either automatic algorithms or human raters-are no longer in correspondence with the super-resolved volume. To address this, we develop an SSR deep network that takes both an anisotropic LR MR image and its corresponding LR labels as input and produces both a super-resolved MR image and its super-resolved labels as output. We evaluated our method with 50 -weighted brain MR images 4× down-sampled with 10 automatically generated labels. In comparison to other methods, our method had superior Dice across all labels and competitive metrics on the MR image. Our approach is the first reported method for SSR of paired anisotropic image and label volumes.

Dual-polarity readout is a simple and robust way to mitigate Nyquist ghosting in diffusion-weighted echo-planar imaging but imposes doubled scan time. We here propose how dual-polarity readout can be implemented with little or no increase in scan time by exploiting an observed b-value dependence and signal averaging. The b-value dependence was confirmed in healthy volunteers with distinct ghosting at low b-values but of negligible magnitude at b = 1000 s/mm2.

Proximity ferroelectricity in wurtzite heterostructures.

Nature

January 2025

Department of Materials Science and Engineering, The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA, USA.

Proximity ferroelectricity is an interface-associated phenomenon in electric-field-driven polarization reversal in a non-ferroelectric polar material induced by one or more adjacent ferroelectric materials. Here we report proximity ferroelectricity in wurtzite ferroelectric heterostructures. In the present case, the non-ferroelectric layers are AlN and ZnO, whereas the ferroelectric layers are AlBN, AlScN and ZnMgO.

PdSe/NbSe Heterojunction Photodetector with Broadband Detection and Polarization Sensitivity.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

January 2025

Key Laboratory of Display Materials and Photoelectric Devices (Ministry of Education), Tianjin Key Laboratory of Photoelectric Materials and Devices, National Demonstration Center for Experimental Function Materials Education, School of Materials Science and Engineering, Tianjin University of Technology, Tianjin 300384, China.

Polarized photodetectors based on anisotropic two-dimensional (2D) materials display great potential applications in communications and optoelectronics. However, the existence of high dark current, low anisotropic ratio, and response speed limits their development. In this paper, a broadband polarization angle-dependent photodetector based on the PdSe/NbSe van der Waals (vdW) heterojunction has been constructed.

Bio-Orchestration of Cellular Organization and Human-Preferred Sensory Texture in Cultured Meat.

ACS Nano

January 2025

Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, College of Engineering, Yonsei University, Seoul 03722, Republic of Korea.

For cultured meat to effectively replace traditional meat, it is essential to develop scaffolds that replicate key attributes of real meat, such as taste, nutrition, flavor, and texture. However, one of the significant challenges in replicating meat characteristics with scaffolds lies in the considerable gap between the stiffness preferred by cells and the textural properties desired by humans. To address this issue, we focused on the microscale environment conducive to cell growth and the macro-scale properties favored by humans.

The detailed anisotropic dispersion of the low-temperature, low-energy magnetic excitations of the candidate spin-triplet superconductor UTe is revealed using inelastic neutron scattering. The magnetic excitations emerge from the Brillouin zone boundary at the high symmetry and points and disperse along the crystallographic -axis. In applied magnetic fields to at least = 11 T along the , the magnetism is found to be field-independent in the ( 0) plane.
