The involvement of the aortic arch in thoracic aortic aneurysms (TAA), or acute aortic dissections (AAD), represents a challenging clinical entity, mandating a meticulous surgical plan, tailored to each individual case. The advent of endovascular techniques and the introduction of modern arch protheses have led to the implementation of the frozen elephant trunk (FET) technique. This one-step hybrid operation consists of a total aortic arch replacement combined with an antegrade delivery of a stent-graft for the descending aorta, which acts as a proximal landing zone facilitating a potential distal endovascular reintervention.

Background Giant intracranial aneurysms (GIAs) require complex treatment strategies including clipping, coiling, stenting, parent artery occlusion, bypass, or combined procedures. Neurovascular hybrid operating rooms (h-OR) combine a conventional operating theatre with high-resolution digital subtraction angiography (DSA). We describe a one-step combined surgical and endovascular treatment in a h-OR for a paediatric internal carotid artery giant aneurysm that can be an optimal solution to manage challenging cases, such as giant aneurysms.

Purpose: This paper aims to describe a straightforward, efficient, and reliable technique to simplify cannulation maneuvers during aortic branched endograft repair.

Technique: The suggested approach utilizes the Penumbra Neuron Select catheter, which combines diagnostic, sizing, and support capabilities in one. This has the potential to reduce procedural time and minimize the need for serial catheter and guidewire exchanges.

Staging TEVAR after FET - an exception or the rule?

Indian J Thorac Cardiovasc Surg

December 2023

Cardiac Surgery Unit, IRCCS, Azienda Ospedaliero-Universitaria Di Bologna, Via Massarenti 9, 40138 Bologna, Italy.

Purpose: Frozen elephant trunk (FET) was born as an ideal one-step procedure to treat complex arch and descending thoracic aorta pathology. It was then proved that it frequently needs reintervention, which can often be performed by thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) extension since FET provides a safe proximal landing zone. We hereby describe our experience in TEVAR extension after FET, its main indications, technique, and outcomes.

ONE-seq: epitranscriptome and gene-specific profiling of NAD-capped RNA.

Nucleic Acids Res

January 2023

Interdisciplinary Research Center on Biology and Chemistry, Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, 100 Hai Ke Rd., Pudong, Shanghai 201210, China.

The hub metabolite, nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD), can be used as an initiating nucleotide in RNA synthesis to result in NAD-capped RNAs (NAD-RNA). Since NAD has been heightened as one of the most essential modulators in aging and various age-related diseases, its attachment to RNA might indicate a yet-to-be discovered mechanism that impacts adult life-course. However, the unknown identity of NAD-linked RNAs in adult and aging tissues has hindered functional studies.
