SignificanceAn enduring mystery of development is how its timing is controlled, particularly for development after birth, where timing is highly flexible and depends on environmental conditions, such as food availability and diet. We followed timing of cell- and organism-level events in individual larvae developing from hatching to adulthood, uncovering widespread variations in event timing, both between isogenic individuals in the same environment and when changing conditions and genotypes. However, in almost all cases, we found that events occurred at the same time, when time was rescaled by the duration of development measured in each individual. This observation of "temporal scaling" poses strong constraints on models to explain timing of larval development.

The mechanisms underlying the establishment of asymmetric structures during development remain elusive. The wing of Drosophila is asymmetric along the Anterior-Posterior (AP) axis, but the developmental origins of this asymmetry is unknown. Here, we investigate the contribution of cell recruitment, a process that drives cell fate differentiation in the Drosophila wing disc, to the asymmetric shape and pattern of the adult wing.

Otobius megnini (spinose ear tick) is a cosmopolitan soft tick that parasitizes domestic and wild mammals, as well as humans. The larval and nymphal stages are common parasites that feed on blood inside the canal ears of hosts, while adults are nonfeeding and live off the host. Different nymphal stages of O.

The fall armyworm Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) is a major phytophagous pest that invaded China in late 2018, posing a serious threat to local agricultural production. Therefore, we investigated the effects of maize, soybean, and sweet potato on the growth, development, and reproduction of S. frugiperda under laboratory conditions.

Long noncoding RNAs known as roX (RNA on the X) are crucial for male development in Drosophila, as their loss leads to male lethality from the late larval stages. While roX RNAs are recognized for their role in sex-chromosome dosage compensation, ensuring balanced expression of X-linked genes in both sexes, their potential influence on autosomal gene regulation remains unexplored. Here, using an integrative multi-omics approach, we show that roX RNAs not only govern the X chromosome but also target genes on autosomes that lack male-specific lethal (MSL) complex occupancy, together with Polycomb repressive complexes (PRCs).

During early development, zebrafish larvae exhibit stereotypical behaviors, which rapidly become more complex. Thus, generating mutant transgenic lines that maintain transparency throughout their larval stage and that can be used to record brain activity has offered strategic opportunities to investigate the underlying neural correlates of behavior establishment. However, few studies have documented the sensorimotor profile of these lines during larval development.
