Recent brain imaging studies show that the regions comprising the central autonomic network (CAN) receive strong fiber connections from the cerebral cortex to the spinal cord and that the CAN comprehensively controls autonomic functions. Several autonomic function tests are available to investigate CAN function. A thorough knowledge of CAN is important to understand the pathogenesis of not only acute cerebrovascular and degenerative diseases but also postural orthostatic tachycardia with mental vulnerability and some psychiatric disorders. Future studies are warranted to investigate CAN function in patients with postural tachycardia syndrome and some psychiatric disorders, because CAN disturbances may alter patients' emotional status.

Background: Dravet syndrome (DS) is a severe developmental and epileptic encephalopathy associated with loss-of-function variants in the SCN1A gene. Although predominantly expressed in the central nervous system, SCN1A is also expressed in the heart, suggesting a potential link between neuronal and cardiac channelopathies. Additionally, DS carries a high risk of sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP).

An audible manipulation sound is commonly experienced by patients who undergo HVLA manipulation; however, there is little known about the effects and clinical relevance of the audible manipulation sound on cortical output and the autonomic nervous system. Both postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) and Long COVID are currently viewed as heterogeneous disorders with complex, multi-factorial and multi-systemic pathophysiology. POTS, one of the most common autonomic disorders, is a frequent sequela of SARS-CoV-2 infection. Both POTS and autonomic dysfunction, in general, are major pathophysiologic mechanisms of Long COVID.

The visceral organ-brain axis, mediated by vagal sensory neurons, is essential for maintaining various physiological functions. Here, we investigate the impact of liver-projecting vagal sensory neurons on energy balance, hepatic steatosis, and anxiety-like behavior in mice under obesogenic conditions. A small subset of vagal sensory neurons innervate the liver and project centrally to the nucleus of the tractus solitarius, area postrema, and dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus, and peripherally to the periportal areas in the liver.
