We investigated the relationships between cognitive change following stroke, awareness of cognitive impairments, and mood to further understanding of change processes influencing psychological outcomes post-stroke in line with the "Y-shaped" process model. Patients ( = 143;  = 73 years, SD = 13.73; 74 males) were assessed at 3-weeks (T1) and 6-months (T2) post-stroke and had completed the Oxford Cognitive Screen (T1 and T2), the Cognitive Failures Questionnaire (CFQ; T2), and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS; T2). An ANCOVA controlling for disability relating to activities of daily living (ADL) revealed that awareness of cognitive impairment was significantly lower in participants with moderate-severe cognitive impairment. Regression analysis indicated that greater awareness of cognitive impairment and reduced independence in ADL were associated with greater emotional distress at T2. Cognitive improvement was associated with lower emotional distressat T2. Contrary to the awareness hypothesis, moderation analyses suggest that this effect was largest for those most cognitively impaired at T1. Findings emphasize the importance of monitoring stroke patients' capacity to be self-aware when assessing and formulating long-term post-stroke distress and have potential implications for improving long-term emotional status in those most cognitively impaired post-stroke, e.g., through psychoeducation, cognitive rehabilitation, and emotional support.

Objective: Attention forms the foundation for the formation of situation awareness. Low situation awareness can lead to driving performance decline, which can be dangerous in driving. The goal of this study is to investigate how different types of pre-takeover tasks, involving cognitive, visual and physical resources engagement, as well as individual attentional function, affect driver's attention restoration in conditionally automated driving.

The Effect of Executive Function on Word Recognition: Comparison Between Native Chinese and Learners with Chinese as A Second Language (CSL).

J Psycholinguist Res

January 2025

Department of Chinese Language Studies, Centre for Research on Chinese Language and Education, The Education University of Hong Kong, Tai Po, N.T, Hong Kong.

Word recognition is a fundamental reading skill that relies on various linguistic and cognitive abilities. While executive functions (EF) have gained attention for their importance in developing literacy skills, their interaction with domain-specific skills in facilitating reading among different learner groups remains understudied. This study examines the relationship between EF, orthographic awareness, morphological awareness, and Chinese word recognition in 204 Chinese as a second language (CSL) students and 419 native Chinese primary students.

Row Fogo Centre for Research into Ageing and the Brain, and UK Dementia Research Institute, Centre for Clinical Brain Sciences, University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh, UK.

Purpose: Cerebral small vessel disease (cSVD) is a highly prevalent disorder leading to physical, cognitive and functional decline. We report key barriers in the management of individuals with cSVD, the potential benefit of cSVD-dedicated health services, and evidence from existing models of care for adults with cSVD.

Methods: We examined information from a scientific seminar developed between seven experts in cSVD during the eighth European Stroke Organisation Conference that discussed the optimal health care for adults with cSVD and what health services dedicated to cSVD should include.
