An outbreak of novel coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) was reported in Wuhan, China, in December 2019, which was later declared a global pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO) in March 2020. It is a life-threatening contagious infection with infected patients usually presenting with respiratory tract symptoms, although the disease can affect other multiple organs. Coronavirus disease-2019 infection is a hypercoagulable state associated with serious thrombotic complications, particularly in critically ill patients. However, these thrombotic complications are also being reported as a presenting symptom in asymptomatic and mildly symptomatic cases of COVID-19 infection in the absence of any other predisposing risk factors. Renal infarction is one of these thrombotic complications and can present with ambiguous abdominal symptoms leading to irreversible organ damage and other thromboembolic complications, if not diagnosed in time. Physicians must be aware of such uncommon presenting complaints of COVID-19 infection and include it in the differential diagnosis of patients presenting with abdominal symptoms.

Venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA ECMO) may provide temporary hemodynamic support for patients with severe vasodilatory shock due to toxicologic ingestion. In a series of 10 cases of children less than 18 years of age who received VA ECMO support for toxicologic-induced vasodilatory shock, there were eight survivors and two nonsurvivors who died of significant neurologic injury. Upon initiation of ECMO support, survivors had decline in Vasoactive-Inotrope Scores (VIS).

Background: Hepatic artery infusion pump (HAIP) chemotherapy is a locoregional treatment for intrahepatic malignancies. HAIPs are surgically implanted, and the catheter tip is typically inserted into a ligated gastroduodenal artery stump. Potential complications at the catheter insertion site include dehiscence, pseudoaneurysm or extravasation, and adjacent hepatic arterial stenosis and thrombosis.

Purpura fulminans (PF) is a rare but devastating complication of sepsis characterized by a highly thrombotic subtype of disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). A medical emergency, PF cases often require the involvement of consultant hematologists to assist with diagnosis and management of patients who are in a highly dynamic and deteriorating clinical situation. Patients who survive past the first 24 to 72 hours often die from complications of unchecked thrombosis rather than from shock, and survivors are usually left with severe scarring and tissue loss.

Background: In the last years, the Cor-Knot device has been increasingly used in heart valve surgery. Our aim was to investigate the incidence of valvular complications in patients who underwent valvular surgery using the Cor-Knot device in multicentric cohorts at one-year follow-up.

Methods: Three hundred and sixty-eight patient underwent heart valve repair or replacement surgery using automated titanium suture fasteners in four cardiothoracic surgery departments between September 2018 and January 2020.

Comorbid diabetes mellitus (DM) in patients with ischemic heart disease (IHD) is a serious factor that significantly impairs the life prognosis and increases the risk of cardiovascular complications (CVC) as well as the likelihood of death. The residual risk of developing CVC in such patients is largely determined by the high thrombotic status, that is associated with hypercoagulation characteristic of DM. Hypercoagulation causes activation of both platelet and coagulation pathways, which leads to an increased susceptibility to thrombosis.
