5,7-Dihydroxy-2-(1,2-isopropyldioxy-4-oxo-cyclohex-5-enyl)-chromen-4-one (DICO) is a novel non-aromatic B-ring flavonoid, isolated mainly from and has anti-tumour properties. In this study, we investigated the cytotoxicity and underlying biochemical pathways leading to cell death, in response to DICO treatment of a human colon cancer cell line HT-29. Our results indicated that DICO induced apoptosis by elevating the generation of reactive oxygen species, which could be quenched by the antioxidants N-acetyl cysteine. In addition, activation of signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 and suppression of nuclear factor kappa B played a crucial role in DICO-induced apoptosis. Overall, our results provide mechanistic insights into the apoptotic action of a potential anti-tumour drug, DICO.

Glioblastoma (GBM) is a severe form of brain tumor that has a high fatality rate. It grows aggressively and most of the time results in resistance to traditional treatments like chemo- and radiotherapy and surgery Biodiversity, beyond representing a big resource for human well-being, provides several natural compounds that have shown great potential as anticancer drugs. Many of them are being extensively researched and significantly slow GBM progression by reducing the proliferation rate, migration, and inflammation and also by modulating oxidative stress.

Mesenchymal stem cells, due to their multipotent ability, are considered one of the best candidates to be used in regenerative medicine. To date, the most used source is represented by the bone marrow, despite the limited number of cells and the painful/invasive procedure for collection. Therefore, the scientific community has investigated many alternative sources for the collection of mesenchymal stem cells, with the adipose tissue representing the best option, given the abundance of mesenchymal stem cells and the easy access.

To minimize the need of complex testing procedures, accurate, rapid and selective on-site determination of dicofol (DICO) is of vital importance. Herein, fluorescence immunosensing platforms based on the Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) between Au-Ag bimetallic nanoclusters (Au-Ag NCs) and Au nanoflowers (Au NFs) were developed for the rapid detection of DICO in both liquid system and paper-based analytical devices (PADs). Conjugations of Au-Ag NCs and antigen (NCs-Agen) and Au-Ag NCs were regarded as energy donors in liquid system and PADs, respectively, while conjugations of Au NFs and antibody (NFs-Ab) were synthesized as energy acceptors.

Article Synopsis
  • The Italian Society of Nephrology conducted a COVID-19 survey revealing a significant variation in infection rates among hemodialysis patients across different centers, with 1368 out of 60,441 patients infected by April 2020.
  • The study applied multilevel modeling and CART analysis to identify factors influencing infection rates, particularly the importance of testing policies, healthcare worker positivity, and overall community infection rates.
  • Findings suggest that strong testing protocols and understanding local context can help nephrology centers implement effective infection containment strategies, with certain thresholds indicating when to strengthen measures.
