Regaining efficient push-off is a crucial step in restitution of walking ability in impaired individuals. Inspired by the elastic nature of ankle plantarflexor muscle-tendon complex, we propose a novel rehabilitation device: Ankle Exoskeleton using Treadmill Actuation for Push-off assistance (AN-EXTRA-Push). Using a brake and an elastic tendon, it harnesses energy of a moving treadmill during stance phase, then releases it during push-off to aid with plantarflexion torque generation. We studied the feasibility of such a device and explored some key design and control parameters. A parameter sweep of three key parameters (brake engagement timing, brake disengagement timing and elastic tendon stiffness) was conducted . Results suggest that such a device is feasible and might inherently possess some features that simplify its control. Brake engagement timing and elastic tendon stiffness values determine the level of exoskeleton assistance. Our study affirms that timing of assistive torque is crucial, especially the timing of assistance termination which is determined by brake disengagement timing. Insights acquired by this study should serve as a basis for designing an experimental device and conducting studies on effects of AN-EXTRA-Push in humans.

Background: The ciliary muscle is known to play a part in presbyopia, but the mechanism has not received a comprehensive review, which this study aims to achieve. We examined relevant articles published from 1975 through 2022 that explored various properties of the muscle and related tissues in humans and rhesus monkeys. These properties include geometry, elasticity, rigidity, and composition, and were studied using a range of imaging technologies, computer models, and surgical methods.

Resilin, an elastomeric protein with remarkable physical properties that outperforms synthetic rubbers, is a near-ubiquitous feature of the power amplification mechanisms used by jumping insects. Catapult-like mechanisms, which incorporate elastic energy stores formed from a composite of stiff cuticle and resilin, are frequently used by insects to translate slow muscle contractions into rapid-release recoil movements. Introduction: Tendon injuries represent an ongoing challenge in clinical practice due to poor regenerative capacity, structure, and biomechanical function recovery of ruptured tendons. This study is focused on the assessment of a novel strategy to repair ruptured Achilles tendons in a Nude rat model using stem cell-seeded biomaterial.

Tendon-driven continuum soft robots are currently applied in research and are given a promising perspective for future applications. For the routing of the tendons from the actuator to the point where the loading is demanded, two routing possibilities exist in the literature: internal routing of the tendons with the help of structurally embedded Bowden sheaths and external tendon routing where the tendon is not in contact with the soft structure. The application of the latter is a clear disadvantage for applications due to the high risk of interference with the tendon, for example, causing the tendon to break.
