The National Institute on Aging (NIA) plays a pivotal role in advancing scientific research, developing training and the science workforce, and promoting public health initiatives. However, the benefits of the NIA's work have not been equally distributed among all older adult population groups, highlighting persistent disparities in chronic illness burden and access to healthcare and research. As the NIA commemorates its 50th anniversary, this milestone presents an opportunity to reflect on its consequential initiatives and accomplishments while also strategizing for the robust inclusion of underrepresented and minoritized populations and the future health of our Nation's older adult population.

Background: Web-based experimentation, accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic, has enabled large-scale participant recruitment and data collection. Auditory testing on the web has shown promise but faces challenges such as uncontrolled environments and verifying headphone use. Prior studies have successfully replicated auditory experiments but often involved younger participants, limiting the generalizability to older adults with varying hearing abilities.

Background: Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the leading cause of death for women, yet they remain underrepresented in interventional CAD studies. Women have been shown to be at increased risk of mortality and major adverse events after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). The poorer outcomes are likely because women are typically diagnosed with CAD late, at an older age, with more comorbidities, and with more challenging anatomy including smaller vessels and higher prevalence of coronary artery calcification.

New lymphoma treatments, including chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cells, bispecific antibodies, and immune checkpoint inhibitors, have significantly improved patient outcomes. Despite these therapeutic advances, only 2%-3% of adult cancer patients participate in clinical trials. This participation is even lower among certain groups, including ethnic and racial minorities, individuals with low socioeconomic status, rural residents, older adults, and young adults.

Background And Objectives: Early detection of cognitive impairment is crucial for timely clinical interventions aimed at delaying progression to dementia. However, existing screening tools are not ideal for wide population screening. This study explores the potential of combining machine learning, specifically, one-class classification, with simpler and quicker motor-cognitive tasks to improve the early detection of cognitive impairment.
