The structural, electronic and vibrational properties of a water layer on Ag(100) and Ag(511) have been studied by first-principles calculations and molecular dynamics simulations. The most stable water structure on the Ag(100) and Ag(511) surfaces have been obtained. The AIMD results showed rather high stability of the water layer on the stepped surface at 140 K, indicating a crystal-like structure with long-range ordering. The calculated vibrational spectra at 140 K showed good agreement with the experimental results. On the Ag(100) surface, a red-shift was observed when the temperature increased from 140 K to 300 K caused by the change in the number of H-bonded (HB) hydrogen. On Ag(511), a three-fold splitting of the O-H stretch mode was observed. This can be explained by the special water structure at the stepped Ag surface: the relatively strong water-metal interaction at the step edge and weak water-terrace interaction/strong water-water interaction at the terrace, which can also explain the high stability of the water layer on the Ag(511) surface.

The development of mechanically robust super-lubrication hydrogel materials with sustained lubricity at high contact pressures is challenging. In this work, inspired by the durable lubricity feature of the earthworm epidermis, a multilevel structural super-lubrication hydrogel (MS-SLH) system, the so-called lubricant self-pumping hydrogel, is developed. The MS-SLH system is manufactured by chemically dissociating a double network hydrogel to generate robust and wrinkled lubrication layer, and then laser etching was used to generate cylindrical texture pores as gland-like pockets for storing lubricants.

The accumulation of disposable face masks (DFMs) has become a significant threat to the environment due to extensive use during the COVID-19 pandemic. In this research, we investigated the degradation of DFMs after their disposal in landfills. We replicated the potential degradation process of DFMs, including exposure to sunlight before subjecting them to synthetic landfill leachate (LL).

Microbially induced calcite precipitation (MICP) while neutralizing soil pH, can lead to pore clogging which in turn may reduce bacteria transport. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the MICP process for E. coli filtration in two acidic soils.

The solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) strongly determines the stability and reversibility of aqueous Zn-ion batteries (AZIBs). In traditional electrolytes, the nonuniform SEI layer induced by severe parasitic reactions, such as the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), will exacerbate the side reactions on Zn anodes, thus leading to low zinc utilization ratios (ZURs). Herein, we propose to use methoxy ethylamine (MOEA) as a nucleophilic additive, which has a stronger nucleophilic characteristic than water, with the advantage of an abundance of nucleophilic atoms.

Confined space fires could easily cause serious casualties and property damage, and foam is an effective means of preventing confined space fires. The existing foam generator does not have both momentum and foam expansion rate (FER) and is poorly suited to confined spaces. In order to develop a foam generator suitable for confined space fire protection, an in-depth analysis of the physical foaming characteristics of self-suction foam is required, and the structure of the foam generator is optimized accordingly.
