The effects of the vinca alkaloids on the rates of DNA synthesis in the human pancreatic carcinoma line, MIA Pa Ca-2 have been studied by a new technique for measuring cell kinetics and DNA synthesis by flow cytometry and immunofluorescence. The method employs a monoclonal antibody that is highly specific for bromodeoxyuridine or iododeoxyuridine. The drugs vincristine and vindesine do not appear to have a direct effect on DNA synthesis rate across S phase, whereas DHAD, a compound that has been found previously to affect DNA synthesis, does appear by this technique to inhibit DNA synthesis at specific segments of S phase. That vincristine does not block cells in S phase by inhibiting DNA synthesis is borne out of the observation that cells blocked in S or G2 + M can still incorporate BrdUrd at a high rate in these phases of the cell cycle.

Cell-interface engineering is a way to functionalize cells through direct or indirect self-assembly of functional materials around the cells, showing an enhancement to cell functions. Among the materials used in cell-interface engineering, natural biomolecules play pivotal roles in the study of biological interfaces, given that they have good advantages such as biocompatibility and rich functional groups. In this review, we summarize and overview the development of studies of natural biomolecules that have been used in cell-biointerface engineering and then review the five main types of biomolecules used in constructing biointerfaces, namely DNA polymers, amino acids, polyphenols, proteins and polysaccharides, to show their applications in green energy, biocatalysis, cell therapy and environmental protection and remediation.

Infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) is known to cause significant alterations in tracheal microbial flora in broiler chickens 5 days post-infection (dpi) and our focus is to understand the changes in both respiratory and gastrointestinal microbiome in broilers over a period of time following IBV infection. A study was conducted to characterize the tracheal and cecal microbiome in IBV infected and control broiler chickens at 6, 9 and 15 dpi. The ligation strategy has been widely used in the chemical synthesis of atomically precise clusters. A series of thymine (T)-ligated Al-T ( = Be, Al, C; = 1-5) complexes have been studied to reveal the effect of DNA nucleobase ligands on the electronic structures of different superatoms in the present work. In addition to its protective role, the successive attachment of thymine ligands significantly lowers the adiabatic ionization energies (AIEs) of the studied Al superatoms with filled and unfilled electronic shells.
