A new acentric barium borate, BaBO(OH)·(HBO)(HO) (), was synthesized via a hydrothermal process. Compound contains two different boron oxide units of [BO(OH)] anions and HBO molecules and features 9-ring channels along the axis in a layered structure. This barium borate is a possible deep-ultraviolet nonlinear-optical crystal for its moderate second-harmonic-generation signal and wide transparency window below 190 nm.

Electric field induced second harmonic (EFISH) measurements are performed on thin films of arsenic sulfide deposited on chromium coated fused silica substrates by thermal evaporation of amorphous AsS bulk material. EFISH allows to widely tune the second-order optical susceptibility (χ). An observed shift of the minimum of the second harmonic generation (SHG) intensity away from 0 V reveals a non-EFISH bulk χ, which is unexpected for amorphous materials.

In this work, we report on the application of the polarization modulated spectroscopic ellipsometry-based surface plasmon resonance method for sensitive detection of microorganisms in Kretschmann configuration. So far, rotating analyzer and single wavelength polarization modulation methods have widely been investigated for phase sensitive surface plasmon resonance measurement. In this study, a much simpler optical setup relying on fast electro-optic phase modulator crystals is introduced for bacteria detection.

MXenes are a family of two-dimensional (2D) materials with broad and varied applications in biology, materials science, photonics, and environmental remediation owing to their layered structure and high surface area-to-volume ratio. MXenes have exhibited significant nonlinear optical characteristics, which have been primarily explored in the context of photonics applications, yet the second-harmonic generation (SHG) behavior of MXenes remains an unexplored aspect of their optical properties. Herein, we demonstrate and quantify large second-order responses of 2D TiCT MXenes both in aqueous solutions and on a silicon substrate for the first time.

Through comprehensive data analysis, we demonstrate that a χ(2)-induced artifact, arising from imperfect balancing in the conventional electro-optic sampling detection scheme, contributes significantly to the measured signal in 2D Raman-THz spectroscopy of non-centrosymmetric materials. The artifact is a product of two 1D responses, overwhelming the desired 2D response. We confirm that by analyzing the 2D Raman-THz response of an x-cut beta barium borate crystal.

Smions doped Phospho-Borate glasses were synthesized and their physical and spectroscopic parameters were studied to evaluate its potential reddish-orange emission for photonic applications. Structural investigation made through XRD analysis confirms the amorphous nature. The evaluated bonding parameters from the absorption spectral analysis confirm the ionic bonding of the Sm-O network in the prepared glasses.
