Attractive toxic sugar baits (ATSB) are a novel and effective mosquito control tool based on sugar-feeding behaviors and oral ingestion. In general, there is a demand from consumers for more novel control products with more effective active ingredients. (BTi) is a major larvicide for control of mosquito larvae. This study evaluated BTi as an active ingredient of toxic sugar baits (TSB) against adult , , and compared with a positive control of 1% boric acid toxic sugar bait. Ingestion of BTi TSB by female mosquitoes resulted in an average mortality at 48 h of 97% for , 98% for , and 100% for . The study findings suggest ingestible BTi TSBs could be a viable alternative to current mosquito control strategies and programs against adults of these three species of mosquitoes.

Health risk assessment of potassium bromate in bread in Ghana.

Heliyon

January 2024

Food Laboratory Department, Food and Drugs Authority, Post Office Box CT2783, Cantonments, Accra, Ghana.

Introduction: Potassium bromate (KBrO) is an oxidizing agent added to flour to improve bread quality. However, KBrO is nephrotoxic, and a class B carcinogen banned in most countries, including Ghana.

Aim: This study aimed to determine the residual KBrO concentration in bread and to estimate the chemical and carcinogenic risk that is associated with the consumption of these breads in Ghana.

Five new non-holostane di- and trisulfated triterpene pentaosides, conicospermiumosides A-1 (), A-2 (), A-3 (), A-1 (), and A-2 () were isolated from the Far Eastern sea cucumber Levin et Stepanov (Cucumariidae, Dendrochirotida). Twelve known glycosides found earlier in other species were also obtained and identified. The structures of new compounds were established on the basis of extensive analysis of the 1D and 2D NMR spectra, as well as by the HR-ESI-MS data.

Although pesticides have been a constant concern for decades, in the last ten years, public discussions and scientific research have emphasized their impact on human health and the environment, drawing increased attention to the problems associated with their use. The association of environmental stressors such as pesticides with a sugar-rich diet can contribute to the growing global metabolic disease epidemic through overlapping mechanisms of insulin resistance, inflammation, and metabolic dysregulation. The main aim of this study was to evaluate the behavioral effects of the exposure of Silver crucian carp () to a commercial insecticide formulation containing fipronil, pyriproxyfen, and other additives, as well as sucrose and their mixtures.

Unlabelled: The ability to treat infections is threatened by the rapid emergence of antibiotic resistance among pathogenic microbes. Therefore, new antimicrobials are needed. Here we evaluate mannitol-1-phosphate 5-dehydrogenase (MtlD) as a potential new drug target.

Marine Heatwaves Exacerbate the Toxic Effects of Tire Particle Leachate on Microalgae.

Environ Sci Technol

December 2024

International Research Center for Marine Biosciences at Shanghai Ocean University, Ministry of Science and Technology, Shanghai Ocean University, Shanghai 201306, China.

Additives leached from tire particles (TPs) after entering the marine environment inevitably interact with marine life. Marine heatwaves (MHWs) would play a more destructive role than ocean warming during the interaction of pollutants and marine life. To evaluate the potential risks of TPs leachate under MHWs, the physiological and nutrient metabolic endpoints of microalgae were observed for 7 days while being exposed to TPs leachate at current or predicted concentrations under MHWs.
