Here a highly selective molecular imprinting polymer was developed to attenuate biofilm formation of the multidrug-resistant pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa by disrupting the intermolecular signaling system. Firstly, a dummy template molecular imprinting polymer (MIP) was rationally designed through molecular modeling to capture 2-heptyl-3-hydroxy-4-quinolone (Pseudomonas quinolone signal). This multifunctional signaling molecule interferes with the pathogenicity of P. aeruginosa as an auto-inducer. Then, the synthesized MIP and the non-imprinted polymer (NIP) as reference polymer were evaluated for their binding capacity and biofilm inhibition. The results indicated a significant difference in biofilm inhibition (∼56%) between imprinted (∼67%) and non-imprinted (∼11%) polymer, which is an impressive level, especially for the treatment of various surfaces affected by P. aeruginosa. These results open a new window in the special biological application of MIPs as a promising candidate to reduce concerns in clinical or industrial issues by preventing microbial infections.

This work involves the preparation of dual surrogate-imprinted polymers (D-MIPs) for the capture of SARS-CoV-2. To achieve this goal, an innovative and novel dual imprinting approach using carboxylated-polystyrene (PS-COOH) nanoparticles with a diameter of 100 nm and a SARS-CoV-2 Spike-derived peptide was carried out at the surface of amine-functionalized silica (PS-NH) microspheres with a diameter of 500 nm. Firstly, PS-COOH nanoparticles with the same size and spherical shape as the SARS-CoV-2 virus were employed to form hemispherical indentations (HI) at the surface of the PS-NH microspheres (obtaining dummy particle-imprinted polymers, HI-MIPs).

Designing single-template molecularly imprinted chiral sensors for the enantioselective recognition of various chiral amino acids (AAs) is of great importance for chiral analysis. Here, a dummy template-based chiral sensor is developed by using l-alanine (l-Ala) as the dummy template and poly(-phenylenediamine) as the imprinting layer, which can be used for the enantioselective recognition of various chiral AAs such as Ala, tryptophan (Trp), tyrosine (Tyr), cysteine (Cys), and arginine (Arg). Compared with conventional single-template molecularly imprinted chiral sensors, the designed single-template chiral sensor shows great universality for the recognition of chiral AAs since all chiral AAs possess an Ala-analogous segment.

The aim of this study is to develop molecularly imprinted protein specific to zearalenone (ZEN). The primary idea of our study was to replace the toxic template-ZEN-with a dummy-template-4-hydroxicoumarin-during the synthesis of imprinted proteins (IPs). The choice of the dummy-template was based on the results of comprehensive evaluation that included a combination of blind docking and molecular dynamics simulations.

Currently, analyzing pharmaceuticals and biomarkers is crucial for ensuring medication safety and protecting life and health, and there is an urgent need to develop new and efficient analytical techniques in view of the limitations of traditional analytical methods. Molecularly imprinted ratiometric fluorescent (MI-RFL) sensors have received increasing attention in the field of analytical detection due to their high selectivity, sensitivity and anti-interference ability, short response time, and visualization. This review summarizes the recent advances of MI-RFL sensors in the field of pharmaceuticals and biomarkers detection.
