We examined the effects of nitrogen addition (0, 30, 60, and 90 kg N·hm·a) to soil microbial biomass, enzyme activities, and nutrient contents of the mixed plantations in the Three Gorges Reservoir Area, with the aim to provide a theoretical basis for predicting soil carbon dynamics under the background of continuously increasing atmospheric nitrogen deposition in this area. The results showed that nitrogen addition at all levels led to a significant increase of the contents of organic carbon, total nitrogen, microbial biomass carbon (MBC), microbial biomass nitrogen (MBN), and microbial biomass phosphorus (MBP) in the forest soil, while a decrease of soil pH-value, and no significant effect on the total phosphorus content. Nitrogen addition increased the activities of β-1-4 glucosidase (BG), cellobiose hydrolase (CB), acid phosphatase (AP), N-acetylglucosaminosidase (NAG) and peroxidase (POD), while inhibited that of polyphenol oxidase (PPO). There was a significant seasonal variation in soil oxidase activities, in which the peroxidase activity was higher in May and August, and the polyphenol oxidase activity was the highest in August. Soil enzyme activities were significantly correlated with soil moisture and the contents of soil nutrients, MBC, MBN, and MBP. The variation of soil enzyme activities was caused by the comprehensive effects of multiple factors. The redundancy analysis (RDA) showed that the contents of total soil nitrogen and MBC were the main environmental factors driving soil enzyme activities. The continuous increase of atmosphere nitrogen deposition would lead to soil acidification and promote the turnover of soil organic carbon and nutrient cycling in the - mixed plantations of the study area.

Excessive utilization of chemical fertilizers degrades the quality of medicinal plants and soil. Bio-organic fertilizers (BOFs) including microbial inoculants and microalgae have garnered considerable attention as potential substitutes for chemical fertilizer to enhance yield. In this study, a field experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of BOF partially substituting chemical fertilizer on the growth and quality of medicinal plant .

The oleaginous yeast is recognized for its remarkable lipid accumulation under nitrogen-limited conditions. However, precise control of microbial lipid production in remains challenging due to the complexity of nutrient media. We developed a two-stage fed-batch fermentation process using a well-defined synthetic medium in a 5-L bioreactor.

Microplastic (MP) pollution has become one of global concern. While MP pollution in lakes has been well studied, research on MP sources, distribution, and ecological risks in the Tibetan Plateau is limited. We systematically investigated the MP abundance and distribution in alpine travertine lakes in Jiuzhai nature reserve located in east edge of Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau and assessed the distributions of microbiomes, antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), and virulence factor genes (VFGs) in water, sediments, and MPs, using macrogenomics.

Proteins are indispensable for maintaining a healthy diet and performing crucial functions in a multitude of physiological processes. The growth of the global population and the emergence of environmental concerns have significantly increased the demand for protein-rich foods such as meat and dairy products, exerting considerable pressure on global food supplies. Single-cell proteins (SCP) have emerged as a promising alternative source, characterized by their high protein content and essential amino acids, lipids, carbohydrates, nucleic acids, inorganic salts, vitamins, and trace elements.

The goal of this study was to characterize the microbial profile of two different fresh pork cuts, bootjack (BJ) trim and tenderloin (TL), through a 16S rRNA sequencing workflow developed specifically for investigating low-biomass fresh meat within a commercial production schedule. Additionally, this study aimed to determine a baseline prevalence and enumeration profile across these two fresh pork cuts. Results showed that microbiome diversity was different between the BJ and TL, and also differed significantly by processing date.
