This study characterized growth characteristics and cellular details employing microscopy techniques in hydroponically-grown Ca-sufficient and Ca-deficient grapevines (Vitis vinifera) in a glasshouse. The Ca-deficient vines exhibited significant reductions in shoot length, shoot and trunk fresh weights, leaf area, chlorophyll, which eventually led to drooping, yellowing, and chlorosis of leaves. Roots were less dense and primarily dark and necrotic. Furthermore, their xylem vessels were small, polygonal, and appeared to be collapsed yet increased in number and developed lateral roots. Despite such alterations, the anatomical organization of leaves was not affected, yet they developed with more xylem vessels with thick walls and lignin in their mesophyll and vascular tissues. The chloroplasts in internodes' chlorenchyma, phloem, and cambium underwent significant ultrastructural modifications. The concentrations of macro and micronutrients varied significantly among the roots, trunk, canes, and leaves, including the growth characteristics. These structural and growth modifications of calcium deficiency enable us to understand better the link between the symptoms and functions and for a holistic understanding of Ca functionalities.

Background: Urinary tract infections are prone to overdiagnosis, and reflex urine culture protocols offer a valuable opportunity for diagnostic stewardship in this arena. However, there is no recommended standard testing approach. Cancer patients are often excluded from reflex urine culture protocols, especially if severely immunosuppressed or neutropenic.

Applied Mandibular Osteometry in Young Lambs: Morphometric and Clinical Insights.

Anat Histol Embryol

January 2025

Laboratório de Design Anatômico/LabDA-Departamento de Morfologia, Universidade Federal de Santa Maria, Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.

Osteometric studies of the mandible are useful for identifying polymorphisms that are affected by general factors of anatomical variation, such as breed and gender, but age-related changes have not yet been reported in sheep. Our results showed that the morphometric parameters of the mandible were significantly affected by the age of the lambs. However, at 155 days of age, the mandible already presents all the morphological characteristics observed in adult animals.

As the core of leaf functional traits, the trade-off relationship between the petiole and lamina expresses the plant's adaptability to the environment in terms of support structure and photosynthesis. We investigated the proportions of allometric growth in the relationship between the petiole and the lamina of broadleaf woody plants in temperate highland Tianshan Mountains montane forests through three dimensions (length, area, and mass), including the length of the lamina (LL) and the length of the petiole (PL), and the area of the lamina (LA) and petiole cross sectional area (PCA) versus the mass of the lamina (LM) and the mass of the petiole (PM), as well as exploring the characteristics of the variance in response to seasonal changes. We found that the functional traits in all three dimensions showed a clear convergent evolution as the seasons progressed, that is, a "seasonal effect" of increasing and then decreasing.

Hydraulic conductivity and photosynthetic capacity of seedlings of genotypes.

Photosynthetica

January 2025

Plant Physiology Sector, State University of Norte Fluminense, Center for Sciences and Agricultural Technologies (CCTA), Avenida Alberto Lamego, 2000, 28015-620, Campos dos Goytacazes, RJ, Brazil.

The aim was to investigate the morphological, photosynthetic, and hydraulic physiological characteristics of different genotypes of under controlled cultivation conditions. Growth, conductance, and hydraulic conductivity of the root system of 16 genotypes were evaluated in Experiment 1 (November 2013). In Experiment 2 (December 2014), in addition to the previous characteristics, gas exchange, photochemical efficiency, leaf water potential, and leaf hydraulic conductivity were investigated in five genotypes.

Background: Development of acute kidney injury (AKI) in patients with sepsis is associated with increased mortality, highlighting the importance of early detection and management. However, baseline creatinine or urine output measurements are required for AKI diagnosis, which can be challenging in emergency departments (EDs). We aimed to evaluate the association between urinary biomarkers and the AKI diagnosis or 30-day survival status in patients with sepsis in the ED.
