Plants have two types of reproduction: sexual, resulting in embryo production, and asexual, resulting in vegetative bodies commonly derived from stems and roots (e.g., bulb, tuber). Dead organs enclosing embryos (DOEEs, such as seed coat and pericarp) are emerging as central components of the dispersal unit acting to nurture the embryo and ensure its survival in the habitat. Here we wanted to investigate the properties of dead organs enclosing plant asexual reproductive bodies, focusing on the garlic () bulb. We investigated the biochemical and biological properties of the outer peel enclosing the bulb and the inner peel enclosing the clove using various methodologies, including bioassays, proteomics, and metabolomics. The garlic peels differentially affected germination and post-germination growth, with the outer peel demonstrating a strong negative effect on seed germination of and on post-germination growth of . Proteome analysis showed that dead garlic peels possess 67 proteins, including chitinases and proteases, which retained their enzymatic activity. Among primary metabolites identified in garlic peels, the outer peel accumulated multiple sugars, including rhamnose, mannitol, sorbitol, and trehalose, as well as the modified amino acid 5-hydroxylysine, known as a major component of collagen, at a higher level compared to the clove and the inner peel. Growth of and was promoted by garlic peel extracts but inhibited by clove extract. All extracts strongly inhibited spore germination of . Thus, the garlic peels not only provide physical protection to vegetative offspring but also appear to function as a refined arsenal of proteins and metabolites for enhancing growth and development, combating potential pathogens, and conferring tolerance to abiotic stresses.

Searching for natural alternatives to replace environmentally harmful chemical reagents in analysis is just as crucial as finding easily accessible analytical tools. To reinforce these concepts, this study proposes a simple spectrofluorometric approach using natural carbon quantum dots (n-CQDs) as fluorescence probes for sensitive and environmentally friendly measurement of molnupiravir, an antiviral drug that was initially developed for influenza and has demonstrated potential efficacy against COVID-19. n-CQDs were synthesized using garlic peels (GP), a waste material, via a microwave-assisted method.

Garlic peels are frequently disposed of as agro-waste; their bioactivity and physiological activity for health benefits and disease protection are neglected. This study aims to examine the potential inhibitory effects of garlic peel extract as an antioxidant on 4 T1 triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) tumors in mice. The bioactive constituents of garlic peel were identified through HPLC-MS/MS analysis, while the antioxidant properties of garlic peel extract were assessed using peroxyl radical scavenging capacity (PSC) and cellular antioxidant activity (CAA) assays.

Agriculture-based industries generate huge amounts of byproducts/wastes every year, which are not exploited or disposed efficiently posing an environmental problem with implications to human and animal health. Finding strategies to increase the recycling of agro-industrial byproducts/wastes (AIBWs) is a primary objective of the current study. A thorough examination of AIBWs in conjunction with experimental research is proposed to facilitate sorting for various agro-industrial applications and consequently increasing byproduct/waste utilization.

Electronic address:

This work focused on the construction of bioactive packaging films based on carboxymethyl chitosan and poly(vinyl alcohol) (CMP) as polymeric matrix and fortified with chitin nanowhiskers, Cotylelobium lanceolatum phenolic extract (CL) and in situ synthesized nano selenium. Extensive morphological, microstructural, physical and mechanical analysis revealed that the nanofillers were well-dispersed and integrated into CMP matrix. Incorporation of the extract and nano selenium produced excellent UV blocking properties without seriously compromising the transparency of the composite (CMP/CNW/CLNS1) film.

Black garlic is rich in brown pigments and Maillard reaction products are known for antioxidant activity and health promoting effects. In the present investigation, we report a facile strategy for fabricating low-fat innovative mayonnaise (IM) using black garlic particles (BGP) as a natural pigment, and a functional ingredient. Whey protein concentrate and high methoxyl pectin at optimized concentrations were utilized for fabricating an IM which served as a control.
