A new dsRNA virus from the oomycete has been characterized and designated as Phytophthora pluvialis RNA virus 1 (PplRV1). The genome of the PplRV1 reference genome is 6742 bp that encodes two predicted open reading frames (ORFs). ORF1 and ORF2 overlap by a 47 nt "slippery" frameshift sequence. ORF1 encodes a putative protein of unknown function. ORF2 shows high similarity to the RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp) of other dsRNA viruses. Phylogenetic analysis of the putative PplRV1 RdRp and its most closely related viruses showed PplRV1 is distinct from other known viruses (below 33% amino acid similarity), which indicates this virus may belong to a new virus family. Analyses of the geographical distribution of PplRV1 in relation to two genetically distinct classes of its host revealed two corresponding genotypes of the PplRV1 (termed a and b), which share 92.3% nt identity. The reference genome for the second genotype is 6760 bp long and a prediction of its genetic organization shows three ORFs, with ORF2 being split into two ORFs, ORF2a and ORF2b, that is conserved in seven of eleven genotype b isolates. Additionally, a quick and simple diagnostic method using qPCR has been developed, which is suitable for large scale screens to identify PplRV1 in .

Background: SHEN26 (ATV014) is an oral RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp) inhibitor with potential anti-SARS-CoV-2 activity. Safety, tolerability, and pharmacokinetic characteristics were verified in a Phase I study. This phase II study aimed to verify the efficacy and safety of SHEN26 in COVID-19 patients.

Background: The negative impact of COVID-19 pandemic on healthcare service utilization has been reported in several countries. In Gabon, data on the preparedness for future pandemic are lacking. The aim of the present study was to assess the trends of hospital attendance, malaria and self-medication prevalences as well as ITN use before and during Covid-19 first epidemic waves in a paediatric wards of a sentinel site for malaria surveillance, in Libreville, Gabon.

Aedes mosquitoes transmit pathogenic arthropod-borne (arbo) viruses, putting nearly half the world's population at risk. Blocking virus replication in mosquitoes is a promising approach to prevent arbovirus transmission, the development of which requires in-depth knowledge of virus-host interactions and mosquito immunity. By integrating multi-omics data, we find that heat shock factor 1 (Hsf1) regulates eight small heat shock protein (sHsp) genes within one topologically associated domain in the genome of the Aedes aegypti mosquito.

The process of viral entry into host cells is crucial for the establishment of infection and the determination of viral pathogenicity. A comprehensive understanding of entry pathways is fundamental for the development of novel therapeutic strategies. Standard techniques for investigating viral entry include confocal microscopy and flow cytometry, both of which provide complementary qualitative and quantitative data.

The COVID-19 pandemic may have exacerbated mental health conditions by introducing and/or modifying stressors, particularly in university populations. We examined longitudinal patterns, time-varying predictors, and contemporaneous correlates of moderate-severe psychological distress (MS-PD) among college students. During 2020-2021, participants completed self-administered questionnaires quarterly (T1 = 562, T2 = 334, T3 = 221, and T4 = 169).
