We investigated the effect of fenofibrate nano-eyedrops (FenoNano) on impaired retinal blood flow regulation in type 2 diabetic mice. Six-week-old db/db mice were randomly divided into an untreated group ( = 6) and treated group, which received FenoNano ( = 6). The longitudinal changes in retinal neuronal function and blood flow responses to systemic hyperoxia and flicker stimulation were evaluated every 2 weeks in diabetic db/db mice treated with FenoNano ( = 6) or the vehicle ( = 6) from ages 8-14 weeks. The retinal blood flow was assessed using laser speckle flowgraphy. We also evaluated the expressions of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), and aquaporin 4 (AQP4) and the phosphorylation of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPAR-α) by immunofluorescence. In db/db mice treated with FenoNano, both responses were restored from 8 to 14 weeks of age compared with the diabetic mice treated with the vehicle. At 14 weeks of age, the impaired regulation of retinal blood flow during systemic hyperoxia and flicker stimulation improved to about half of that in the db/db mice treated with FenoNano compared with the db/m control group ( = 5). FenoNano prevented the activation of VEGF and GFAP expression and increased the AQP4 expression and the phosphorylation of PPAR-α detected by immunofluorescence compared with the diabetic mice treated with the vehicle eyedrop. Our results suggested that the fenofibrate nano-eyedrops prevent retinal glial dysfunction via the phosphorylation of PPAR-α and improves the retinal blood flow dysregulation in type 2 diabetic mice.

This was an original article, and the objective of this study was to investigate the effects of bipolar transurethral plasma kinetic prostatectomy (TUPKP) on urodynamics and sexual function in benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) patients. One hundred and four BPH patients were divided into a control group and an intervention group. The control group received transurethral resection of prostate, while the intervention group received TUKEP.

A NIRS-Based Technique for Monitoring Brain Tissue Oxygenation in Stroke Patients.

Division of Neurological Rehabilitiation, Instituto Nacional de Rehabilitacion Luis Guillermo Ibarra Ibarra, Mexico City 14389, Mexico.

Stroke is a global health issue caused by reduced blood flow to the brain, which leads to severe motor disabilities. Measuring oxygen levels in the brain tissue is crucial for understanding the severity and evolution of stroke. While CT or fMRI scans are preferred for confirming a stroke due to their high sensitivity, Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS)-based systems could be an alternative for monitoring stroke evolution.

The monitoring of peripheral circulation, as indicated by the capillary refill time, is a sensitive and accurate method of assessing the microcirculatory status of the body. It is a widely used tool for the evaluation of critically ill patients, the guidance of therapeutic interventions, and the assessment of prognosis. In recent years, there has been a growing emphasis on microcirculation monitoring which has led to an increased focus on capillary refill time.

Peripheral Hemodynamics Estimation Using the Photoplethysmography Method.

Internal Medicine, Kanai Hospital, 612-12, Yodokizu-cho, Fushimi-ku, Kyoto 613-0911, Japan.

Diabetes is known to reduce blood circulation in capillaries and arterioles; however, no devices can easily measure this on a daily basis. In this study, we developed a tool for measuring finger photoplethysmograms using green light and near-infrared LEDs. Thereafter, photoplethysmography was conducted on 25 inpatients/outpatients with diabetes and 21 adult males and females who had not been diagnosed with or treated for diabetes, hypertension, or cardiovascular disease (control group).

SPT-07A, a D-borneol, is currently being developed in China for the treatment of ischemic stroke. We aimed to create a whole-body physiologically-based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) model to predict the pharmacokinetics of SPT-07A in rats, dogs, and humans. The in vitro metabolism of SPT-07A was studied using hepatic, renal, and intestinal microsomes.
