In the magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG), one of the most remarkable observations is the C_{3}-symmetry-breaking nematic state. We identify that the nematicity in MATBG is the E-symmetry ferro bond order, which is the modulation of correlated hopping integrals owing to the E-symmetry particle-hole pairing condensation. The nematicity in MATBG originates from prominent quantum interference among SU(4) valley+spin composite fluctuations. This novel "valley+spin fluctuation interference mechanism" is revealed by the density wave equation analysis for the realistic multiorbital Hubbard model for MATBG. We find that the nematic state is robust once three van Hove singularity points exist in each valley. This interference mechanism also causes novel time-reversal-symmetry-broken valley polarization accompanied by a charge loop current. We discuss interesting similarities and differences between MATBG and Fe-based superconductors.

We study symmetry-broken phases in twisted bilayer graphene at small filling above charge neutrality and at van Hove filling. We argue that the Landau functionals for the particle-hole order parameters at these fillings both have an approximate SU(4) symmetry, but differ in the sign of quartic terms. We determine the order parameter manifold of the ground state and analyze its excitations.

Designing Quantum Spin-Orbital Liquids in Artificial Mott Insulators.

Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Oklahoma, Norman, OK 73069, USA.

Quantum spin-orbital liquids are elusive strongly correlated states of matter that emerge from quantum frustration between spin and orbital degrees of freedom. A promising route towards the observation of those states is the creation of artificial Mott insulators where antiferromagnetic correlations between spins and orbitals can be designed. We show that Coulomb impurity lattices on the surface of gapped honeycomb substrates, such as graphene on SiC, can be used to simulate SU(4) symmetric spin-orbital lattice models.

SU(4) Skyrmions in the ν=±1 Quantum Hall State of Graphene.

We explore different Skyrmion types in the lowest Landau level of graphene at a filling factor ν=±1. In addition to the formation of spin and valley pseudospin Skyrmions, we show that another type of spin-valley entangled Skyrmions can be stabilized in graphene due to an approximate SU(4) spin-valley symmetry that is affected by sublattice symmetry-breaking terms. These Skyrmions have a clear signature in spin-resolved density measurements on the lattice scale, and we discuss the expected patterns for the different Skyrmion types.
