Patients with critical illness often display variable hypo- and hypercoagulable sequalae requiring intense monitoring and anticoagulation pharmacotherapy to prevent or treat inappropriate clot formation. It is imperative to understand the various stages of the clotting cascade and where each pharmacotherapy agent exerts its therapeutic effect. Common coagulation tests are utilized to monitor the areas of the clotting cascade and the effects that anticoagulant pharmacotherapy exhibits. Many novel coagulation tests are also in development. The purpose of this narrative review is to evaluate commonly utilized coagulation tests that monitor anticoagulation while in the intensive care unit.

Background And Objectives: Access to blood components in pre-hospital bleeding resuscitation is challenging. Dried plasma is a logistically superior alternative, and new products are emerging. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate laboratory and practical differences in three differently produced dried plasma products.

Background - Although Factor XI (FXI) inhibitors are currently tested for the prevention of thrombotic events, their early treatment could prevent thrombus consolidation in ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). This study aims to characterize coagulation FXI levels and their variations in patients with STEMI undergoing primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Methods - Patients with STEMI were prospectively enrolled between December 2023 and May 2024.

Background: Currently, there is a dearth of systematic research data on the phenomenon of false-positive reactions in treponemal tests. The aim of this study is to analyze the clinical characteristics and influencing factors associated with false-positive treponemal tests in patients, so as to enhance the diagnostic accuracy of syphilis and mitigate misdiagnosis-induced incorrect treatment.

Methods: From January 2017 to December 2023, a total of 759 cases with false-positive results for treponema were screened for blood transfusion, surgery, or other medical interventions at Jinling hospital.

Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis in early pregnancy: A rare and fatal diagnostic challenge.

Obstet Med

January 2025

Intensive Care and Obstetric Research Group (GRICIO), Universidad de Cartagena, Cartagena, Colombia.

Objective: This report details the complexities of diagnosing and treating rapid-onset multisystemic hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) during pregnancy, as evidenced by a fatal case in early pregnancy with severe hematological and obstetric complications.

Case Presentation: A 20-year-old pregnant woman in her second pregnancy presented at 8 weeks of gestation with abdominal pain, fever, and rectal bleeding. Laboratory tests revealed leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, and anemia, leading to immediate transfusion and intensive care unit admission.

Achilles tendon is a motor organ that is prone to tissue adhesion during its repair process after rupture. Therefore, developing motion-responsive and anti-adhesive biomaterials is an important need for the repair of Achilles tendon rupture. Here, we report an injectable lubricative hydrogel (ILH) based on hydration lubrication mechanism, which is also motion-responsive based on sol-gel reversible transmission.
