A new liquid-liquid extraction system for molybdenum(VI) was studied. It contains 4-nitrocatechol (4NC) as a complexing chromogenic reagent and benzalkonium chloride (BZC) as a source of heavy cations (BZ), which are prone to form chloroform-extractable ion-association complexes. The optimum conditions for the determination of trace molybdenum(VI) were found: concentrations of 4NC and BZC (7.5 × 10 mol dm and 1.9 × 10 mol dm, respectively), acidity (3.75 × 10 mol dm HSO), extraction time (3 min), and wavelength (439 nm). The molar absorptivity, limit of detection, and linear working range were 5.5 × 10 dm mol cm, 5.6 ng cm, and 18.6-3100 μg cm, respectively. The effect of foreign ions was examined, and the developed procedure was applied to the analysis of synthetic mixtures and real samples (potable waters and steels). The composition of the extracted complex was 1:1:2 (Mo:4NC:BZ). Three possible structures of its anionic part [Mo(4NC)O(OH)] were discussed based on optimizations at the B3LYP/3-21G level of theory, and simulated UV/Vis absorption spectra were obtained with the TD Hamiltonian.

Background: Antiseptic solutions are commonly utilized during total joint arthroplasty (TJA) to prevent and treat periprosthetic joint infection (PJI). The purpose of this study was to investigate which antiseptic solution is most effective against methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) and Escherichia coli biofilms established in vitro on orthopaedic surfaces commonly utilized in total knee arthroplasty: cobalt-chromium (CC), oxidized zirconium (OxZr), and polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA).
Methods: MSSA and E.

Within the deep lung, pulmonary surfactant coats the air-liquid interface at the surface of the alveoli. This complex mixture of amphiphilic molecules and proteins modifies the surface tension and mechanical properties of this interface to assist with breathing. In this study, we examine the effects on pulmonary surfactant function by two industrially used compounds composing surfactants and polymers.

Antiseptics have been used for infection control against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Ethanol (EtOH) was found to be effective against SARS-CoV-2, while chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG) was less effective. Therefore, virucidal activity may differ between different classes of antiseptic agents.

Pitting corrosion caused by sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) significantly shortens the lifespan of metallic pipelines. Antibacterial coatings containing S-responsive drug-loaded nanocontainers represent a promising method to mitigate SRB corrosion. However, the challenge of balancing rapid bactericide release with continuous antibacterial effect limits their practical application.

The widespread use of disinfectants and antiseptics has led to the emergence of nosocomial pathogens that are less sensitive to these agents, which in combination with multidrug resistance (MDR) can pose a significant epidemiologic risk. We investigated the susceptibility of nosocomial , , , and to a 0.05% chlorhexidine (CHX) solution and a biocidal S7 composite solution based on CHX (0.
