Air permeability measurements according to the Hagen-Poiseuille equation, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) tests were conducted on samples of cementitious mortar at different curing times to study the correlation between the increased crystallization and their microstructure. The mortar samples were prepared with a commercial fast-setting premix containing calcium silicates and quartz. The average permeability coefficient (K) was 2.96 × 10 m after 3 days and decreased to 3.07 × 10 m after about one month. The continuous C-S-H nucleation in the capillary pores of the cement mortar changes their shape and improves the mortar's impermeability. The SEM images showed the development of crystals that refine the pore size distribution of the cement paste, with more of the smallest pores, and fewer of the largest, as demonstrated by the MIP measurements. Adding a superabsorbent polyacrylate (SA-PA) in the amount of 0.5% wt of dry powder, without adding any extra water, makes a mortar less fluid but not faster-setting. Twenty-four hours after mixing and casting, it is still plastic and, with time, the pore size distribution differs from that of standard mortar. Over time in air, permeability remains high, but in water it could be low due to swelling of SA-PA residues.

Current in vitro cell-based methods, relying on single cell types, have structural and functional limitations in determining lung drug permeability, which is a contributing factor affecting both local and systemic drug levels. To address this issue, we investigated a 3D human lung airway model generated using a cell culture insert, wherein primary human lung epithelial and endothelial cells were cocultured at an air-liquid interface (ALI). To ensure that the cell culture mimics the physiological and functional characteristics of airway tissue, the model was characterized by evaluating several parameters such as cellular confluency, ciliation, tight junctions, mucus-layer formation, transepithelial electrical resistance, and barrier function through assaying fluorescein isothiocyanate-dextran permeability.

Unidirectional moisture-conducting fabrics were prepared by electrospraying polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) onto three green fabric substrates, namely cotton, hemp, and modal. Experiments were conducted to examine the effects of coating thickness, coating material, and substrate material on the moisture conductivity of the fabrics. The electrospraying technique was effective in forming uniform and strongly adhered PVDF and PVC coatings on the fabric substrates, and the coating thickness and material type had a significant effect on the fabric's moisture conductivity.

The national radon surveys in Montenegro revealed that the highest annual average radon concentrations (C) in ground floors of dwellings and schools were found in a rural region characterized as a typical high-karst area. In this region, spanning approximately 800 km, C values in 9 houses and 16 schools ranged from 219 to 2494 Bq/m, with AM = 977 Bq/m. To investigate the causes of these elevated indoor radon concentrations, the following parameters were measured near the 25 surveyed buildings: soil humidity, electrical conductivity, pH, activity concentrations of Ra, U, U, Th and K, radon concentration in soil gas (c), soil permeability for radon gas (k), and gamma dose rate in the air.

Cemented Sand, Gravel, and Rock (CSGR) dams have traditionally used either Conventional Vibrated Concrete (CVC) or Grout-Enriched Roller Compacted Concrete (GERCC) for protective and seepage control layers in low- to medium-height dams. However, these methods are complex, prone to interference, and uneconomical due to significant differences in the expansion coefficient, elastic modulus, and hydration heat parameters among CSGR, CVC, and GERCC. This complexity complicates quality control during construction, leading to the development of Grout-Enriched Vibrated Cemented Sand, Gravel, and Rock (GECSGR) as an alternative.
