The origin of biopolymers is a central question in origins of life research. In extant life, proteins are coded linear polymers made of a fixed set of twenty alpha--amino acids. It is likely that the prebiotic forerunners of proteins, or protopeptides, were more heterogenous polymers with a greater diversity of building blocks and linkage stereochemistry. To investigate a possible chemical selection for alpha versus beta amino acids in abiotic polymerization reactions, we subjected mixtures of alpha and beta hydroxy and amino acids to single-step dry-down or wet-dry cycling conditions. The resulting model protopeptide mixtures were analyzed by a variety of analytical techniques, including mass spectrometry and NMR spectroscopy. We observed that amino acids typically exhibited a higher extent of polymerization in reactions that also contained alpha hydroxy acids over beta hydroxy acids, whereas the extent of polymerization by beta amino acids was higher compared to their alpha amino acid analogs. Our results suggest that a variety of heterogenous protopeptide backbones existed during the prebiotic epoch, and that selection towards alpha backbones occurred later as a result of polymer evolution.

Backgrounds: Memory and emotion are especially vulnerable to psychiatric disorders such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which is linked to disruptions in serotonin (5-HT) metabolism. Over 90% of the 5-HT precursor tryptophan (Trp) is metabolized via the Trp-kynurenine (KYN) metabolic pathway, which generates a variety of bioactive molecules. Dysregulation of KYN metabolism, particularly low levels of kynurenic acid (KYNA), appears to be linked to neuropsychiatric disorders.

Powdered germinated Thai rice () is widely utilised as a dietary supplement to support health and prevent diseases. This study investigated the bioactive compound profile of water extracts from beverage powder made from Thai germinated brown rice (GBRE) and assessed its anticancer effects on cholangiocarcinoma, lung cancer, and liver cancer cell lines. Proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR) revealed 23 metabolites, including amino acids, sugar, phenolic compounds and nitrogenous compounds.

Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV), an important pathogen affecting the pig industry, is an RNA virus with high genetic diversity. In this study, 12,299 clinical samples were collected from northern China during 2021-2023 to investigate the molecular epidemiological characteristics and genetic evolution of PRRSV. All samples were screened using qRT-PCR and further analyzed through gene and whole-genome sequencing.
