The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of smear layer removal after the use of different irrigation methods (passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI), continuous ultrasonic irrigation (CUI), apical negative pressure irrigation and conventional irrigation) using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) as an analytical tool. A total of 100 single-canal teeth were decoronated and randomly divided into five groups ( = 20) according to the irrigation method used: conventional irrigation with front outlet syringe, conventional irrigation with lateral outlet syringe, apical negative pressure irrigation (EndoVac), PUI with Irrisafe and CUI with ProUltra PiezoFlow ultrasonic irrigation needle. Root canal preparation was performed with the ProTaper Gold system up to the F4 instrument, and 5.25% NaOCl was used as an irrigant. After chemical-mechanical preparation, the roots were split longitudinally, and the coronal, middle and apical thirds were examined. SEM digital photomicrographs were taken at ×1000 magnification to evaluate the amount of smear layer in each root canal third; CUI significantly removed more smear layer than any other irrigant activation protocol ( < 0.05); CUI was more effective in removing the smear layer than the other irrigation protocols. However, none of the irrigation protocols were able to produce root canals completely free from smear layer.

: This systematic review aimed to compare the effect of chitosan in smear layer removal with other commonly used chelators during root canal treatment. : The PRISMA guidelines were followed. Ex vivo studies performed in non-endodontically treated extracted human permanent teeth with a fully formed apex, in which sodium hypochlorite was the main irrigant and chitosan was used as final irrigation to observe its capacity to remove the smear layer using a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), were included.

Endodontic therapy aims at preventing or curing apical periodontitis. To conduct this, the cleaning and shaping of the canals are essential. By using an irrigant, such as sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl), practitioners attempt to wash out debris, dissolve organic and inorganic tissue, lubricate the canals, prevent smear layer formation, and disrupt biofilms.

Background: Disinfection of the root canal system is a challenge to all clinicians, calcium hydroxide Ca(OH) one of the most popular intracanal medications used for this purpose, has some unwanted effects on dentine. This study aimed to investigate the antibiofilm effect of Nanochitosan (CSNPs) and Calcium hydroxide Ca(OH) intra canal medications and their effect on the microhardness and chemical structure of radicular dentine.
Methodology: A total of 52 extracted human mandibular premolars were used.

Aim: To investigate the effectiveness of unconventional post space disinfection techniques, specifically Er:YAG laser, Temoporfin, and Carbon Nanoparticles (CNPs), in improving Martens hardness (MH), eliminating the smear layer (SL), and enhancing the push-out bond strength (PBS) of glass fiber posts in canal dentin.
Methods: An in vitro study was conducted utilizing 80 single-rooted extracted human teeth, which were decoronated and subjected to standardized root canal preparation. The teeth were equally distributed into four experimental groups: Group 1 (NaOCl + EDTA), Group 2 (Er: YAG laser + EDTA), Group 3 (Temoporfin + EDTA), and Group 4 (CNPs + EDTA).
