Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is an established rescue therapy for patients with chronic respiratory failure waiting for lung transplantation (LTx). The therapy inherent immobilization may result in fatigue, consecutive deteriorated prognosis, and even lost eligibility for transplantation. We conducted a feasibility study on a novel system designed for the deployment of a portable ECMO device, enabling the physical exercise of awake patients prior to LTx. The system comprises a novel oxygenator with a directly connected blood pump, a double-lumen cannula, gas blender and supply, as well as control and energy management. In vitro experiments included tests regarding performance, efficiency, and blood damage. A reduced system was tested in vivo for feasibility using a novel large animal model. Six anesthetized pigs were first positioned in supine position, followed by a 45° angle, simulating an upright position of the patients. We monitored performance and vital parameters. All in vitro experiments showed good performance for the respective subsystems and the integrated system. The acute in vivo trials of 8 h duration confirmed the results. The novel portable ECMO-system enables adequate oxygenation and decarboxylation sufficient for, e.g., the physical exercise of designated LTx-recipients. These results are promising and suggest further preclinical studies on safety and efficacy to facilitate translation into clinical application.

Limbal stem cell deficiency (LSCD) causes vision loss and is often treated by simple corneal epithelial cell transplantation with poor long-term efficiency. Here, we present a biomimetic bilayer limbal implant using digital light processing 3D printing technology with gelatin methacrylate (GelMA) and poly (ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) bioinks containing corneal epithelial cells (CECs) and corneal stromal stem cells (CSSCs), which can transplant CECs and improve the limbal niche simultaneously. The GelMA/PEGDA hydrogel possessed robust mechanical properties to support surgical transplantation and had good transparency, suitable swelling and degradation rate as a corneal implant.

Background: Boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) is an innovative binary form of radiation therapy with high selectivity towards cancer tissue based on the neutron capture reaction B(n,α)Li, consisting in the exposition of patients to neutron beams after administration of a boron compound with preferential accumulation in cancer cells. The high linear energy transfer products of the ensuing reaction deposit their energy at the cell level, sparing normal tissue. Although progress in accelerator-based BNCT has led to renewed interest in this cancer treatment modality, in vivo dose monitoring during treatment still remains not feasible and several approaches are under investigation.

Background: To examine the feasibility and safety of the SENSEI drop-in gamma probe for robot-assisted, prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA)-radioguided salvage surgery (RGS) in lymph node or local oligorecurrent prostate cancer (PCa), detected via PSMA positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT).
Methods: The first thirteen patients with pelvic oligorecurrent PCa who underwent [Tc]Tc-PSMA-I&S RGS using the SENSEI drop-in gamma probe at the Martini-Klinik (February-June 2024) were retrospectively analyzed. Radioactivity measurements in counts per second (CPS) as absolute values or ratios (CPS of tumor specimens/mean CPS from the patients' benign tissues) were correlated with preoperative imaging and pathological findings (benign/malignant, lesion size).

As the antibiotic resistance of pathogens becomes increasingly severe, it is becoming more feasible to use methods that suppress the virulence of pathogens rather than exerting selective pressure on their growth. , a dangerous opportunistic pathogen, infects hosts by producing multiple virulence factors, which are regulated by quorum-sensing (QS) systems, including the systems, systems, and systems. This study used the chromosome transcription fusion reporter model to screen the traditional Chinese medicine monomer library and found that bakuchiol can effectively inhibit the system and related virulence phenotypes of , including the production of virulence factors (pyocyanin, hydrogen cyanide, elastase, and lectin) and motility (swarming, swimming, and twitching motility) without affecting its growth.

Background: The use of in-vivo dosimetry is a long-standing but also labor-intensive component of risk-level assessment for patients with implanted devices. A calculation-only approach, using treatment planning system (TPS)-calculated doses along with imaging doses estimates when relevant, has the potential to streamline the physics workflow without negatively impacting patient safety.
Purpose: To evaluate the feasibility of using a calculation-only approach for risk level assessment for patients with implanted electronic medical devices.
