A novel multi-mode thermal therapy was developed for local tumor ablation and the systemic stimulation of anti-tumor immunity, consisting of a rapid liquid nitrogen freezing, and followed by the radiofrequency heating of target tumor tissue. This pilot study aimed to compare the therapeutic effects of the new therapy with conventional radiofrequency ablation (RFA) on patients with colorectal cancer liver metastasis (CRCLM). From August 2016 to September 2019, thirty-one patients with CRCLM received either multi-mode thermal therapy ( = 17) or RFA ( = 14). Triphasic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), routine blood tests, and peripheral blood immune responses were evaluated before the treatment and in 1, 3, 6, and 12 months after. Local tumor response and progression-free survival (PFS) were assessed using the Kaplan-Meier method, and pre- and post-treatment immune cell counts were analyzed using Mann-Whitney U and Wilcoxon tests. A significantly longer PFS was observed in the multi-mode thermal therapy group in comparison to that of the conventional RFA group (median, 11.4 versus 3.4 months, = 0.022). It was found that multi-mode therapy induced the functional maturation of dendritic cells, promoted CD4 T cell-mediated antitumor responses, and decreased regulatory T cells, contributing to better therapeutic efficacy in CRCLM patients.

We have built highly controllable sources of thermal and super-thermal states on the basis of a single-mode (SM) and a multi-mode (MM) vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) with noised driving current operating above the threshold. Varying the average driving current and the amplitude and bandwidth of noise, one can robustly obtain light with the temporal second-order intensity correlation function reaching 2.5 and correlation times from 1 µs to 10 ns.

The development of organic phosphorescent scintillators with high exciton utilization efficiency has attracted significant attention but remains a difficult challenge because of the inherent spin-forbidden feature of X-ray-induced triplet excitons. Herein, a design strategy is proposed to develop organic phosphorescent scintillators through thermally activated exciton release to convert stabilized spin-forbidden triplet excitons to spin-allowed singlet excitons, which enables singlet exciton-dominated multi-mode emission simultaneously from the lowest singlet, triplet, and stabilized triplet states. The resultant scintillators demonstrate a maximum photoluminescence efficiency of 65.

Multi-mode emissive materials with stimuli-responsive producing invisible signals are very attractive for advanced security applications, but development of such materials remains highly challenging. In this work, oxygen-doped carbon nitrides (O-CNs) are prepared via microwave-assisted heating of urea, which exhibit ultraviolet (UV) solid-state fluorescence (SSFL), visible room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) and thermal-stimuli production of invisible UV delayed fluorescence (DF) properties. Further studies confirmed that the SSFL and RTP could be attributed to the introduction of oxygen functional group (e.

In this paper, we present a robotically steerable laser ablation probe with application to interstitial thermal therapy. Existing laser interstitial thermal therapy (LITT) methods utilize a straight probe to deliver laser energy around the tip or to the side of the tip. These methods are inadequate to provide effective treatment for large, irregularly shaped tumors.

Twin beams (TWBs) with tight spatial correlations detected by an intensified CCD camera with high spatial resolution are used to prepare the initial fields. Up to three photons are added or subtracted to arrive at the nonclassical and non-Gaussian states.
