The high concentration of salt in industrial wastewater has a strong inhibitory effect on the removal of pollutants by free radicals. A method has been developed to effectively remove micro organic pollutants in industrial high-salinity wastewater. This study investigated the combination of ferrate(VI) (FeO, Fe(VI)) and Fe(III) on the reduction of the pollutants in synthetic high-salinity wastewater, while focusing on the effects of major inorganic substances. Whether in synthetic wastewater with or without salinity, Fe(VI)-Fe(III) process exhibited higher pollutants removal rates than Fe(VI). Both chloride (increasing from (2.2 ± 0.1) × 10 min to (1.1 ± 0.03) × 10 min) and bicarbonate (increasing from (2.2 ± 0.1) × 10 min to (1.1 ± 0.02) × 10 min) significantly enhanced the removal of pollutants by the Fe(VI)-Fe(III) process. Chloride changed the ionic strength of Fe(VI), but Fe(III) strengthened the formation of Fe(V)/Fe(IV) from FeO, which offset the effect of the decrease of HFeO. Bicarbonate complexed Fe(V)/Fe(IV), these complexes enhanced the oxidizing ability of Fe(V)/Fe(IV). Based on the Program Kintecus, Fe(IV) was proposed as the main iron species in Fe(VI)-Fe(III) system, and its concentration was 2 to 3 orders of magnitude higher than Fe(V) at pH 9.0. The enhancement of Fe(VI)-Fe(III) system was observed in the oxidation of pollutant in real wastewater. Overall, the Fe(VI)-Fe(III) process is a new option for treating organic pollutants in industrial high salinity wastewater.

Co-pyrolysis is an efficient approach for municipal sewage sludge (SS) treatment, facilitating the production of biochar and promoting the stabilization and removal of heavy metals, particularly when combined with chlorinated materials. This study explores the impact of pyrolysis temperatures (400 °C and 600 °C) and chlorinated additives (polyvinyl chloride (PVC) as an organic chloride source and ferric chloride (FeCl) as an inorganic chloride source) at 10% and 20% concentrations, on the yield, chemical speciation, leachability, and ecological risks of arsenic (As), chromium (Cr), and zinc (Zn) in biochar derived from SS. The results revealed that increasing the pyrolysis temperature from 400 to 600 °C significantly reduced biochar yield due to enhanced volatilization of organic components, as well as the removal of heavy metals in interaction with chlorinated materials.

Composite photocatalysts based on metal nanoparticles and functional polymers attract much attention compared to inorganic photocatalysts. In this study, a reusable magnetite/anion exchanger (FeO/PPE-2) functional material is synthesized by a hydrothermal method, and its photocatalytic activity is evaluated for the photocatalytic degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB). The results from materials characterization confirm a well-defined morphology of magnetic FeO/PPE-2 functional material and the formation of FeO nanocrystals with different shapes and sizes on the surface of anion exchange material (PPE-2).

The application of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has garnered significant attention in contemporary research. However, the impacts of MOFs on aquatic environments remain largely unclear. This study revealed that the water stability of ZIF-8 is influenced by its concentration, with lower concentrations resulting in higher percentages of Zn release.

Mature compost can reduce gaseous emissions in composting, but its regulation mechanisms via biotic and abiotic functions are largely unknown. This study used fresh and inactivated mature compost as additives in kitchen waste composting to unveil the relevant mechanisms using metagenomic analysis. Results showed that mature compost reduce gaseous emission by improving physiochemical properties and inoculating functional microbes.
