AI Article Synopsis

  • Butyl acetate, commonly used in the chemical and food industries, typically relies on environmentally harmful synthesis methods, prompting the need for greener production alternatives.
  • Researchers developed a genetically modified strain of E. coli that efficiently converts glucose to butyl acetate using a modified pathway to produce butanol, which is then transformed into butyl acetate.
  • This study highlights a sustainable approach to butyl acetate production from renewable resources, achieving a notable yield while maintaining environmentally friendly conditions.

Article Abstract

Background: Butyl acetate is a versatile compound that is widely used in the chemical and food industry. The conventional butyl acetate synthesis via Fischer esterification of butanol and acetic acid using catalytic strong acids under high temperature is not environmentally benign. Alternative lipase-catalyzed ester formation requires a significant amount of organic solvent which also presents another environmental challenge. Therefore, a microbial cell factory capable of producing butyl acetate through fermentation of renewable resources would provide a greener approach to butyl acetate production.

Result: Here, we developed a metabolically engineered strain of Escherichia coli that efficiently converts glucose to butyl acetate. A modified Clostridium CoA-dependent butanol production pathway was used to synthesize butanol which was then condensed with acetyl-CoA through an alcohol acetyltransferase. Optimization of alcohol acetyltransferase expression and redox balance with auto-inducible fermentative controlled gene expression led to an effective titer of 22.8 ± 1.8 g/L butyl acetate produced in a bench-top bioreactor.

Conclusion: Building on the well-developed Clostridium CoA-dependent butanol biosynthetic pathway, expression of an alcohol acetyltransferase converts the butanol produced into butyl acetate. The results from this study provided a strain of E. coli capable of directly producing butyl acetate from renewable resources at ambient conditions.

Article Synopsis
  • A study monitored 61 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from three pharmaceutical companies in Shandong Province, establishing their emission profiles and measuring their potential impact on ozone formation.
  • Average total VOC emissions varied widely, with organized emissions ranging from 6,055.46 to 10,700.10 μg/m and unorganized emissions from 3,665.65 to 6,616.03 μg/m; halogenated hydrocarbons dominated organized emissions while OVOCs were predominant in unorganized emissions.
  • The treatment facilities showed varying efficiencies, with halogenated hydrocarbons being the least effectively treated; total annual emissions were reported between 1.16 to 3.66 tons, with the highest OVOCs

Composite flat-sheet membranes functionalized with imidazolium-based ionic liquids (ILs) grafted to poly(vinyl alcohol)/glutaraldehyde as a catalytic layer were developed to enhance the esterification between -butanol and acetic acid. The functionalized membranes were produced dip-coating commercial pervaporation membranes, and two distinct Brønsted-acidic ILs with an imidazolium-based cation and different (hydrogen sulfate [HSO] or bromide [Br]) anions were compared. Compact, 12 μm-thick, defect-free catalytic layers were observed on top of the pervaporation membrane supports, and the determined penetration depth of the ILs confirmed their presence in the upper part of the coating.

An increase in the consumer demand and the availability of gluten-free products has led to several brewers investigating brewing with grains other than barley. The primary grain of choice has been sorghum. These new gluten-free beers have a unique flavor and aroma, which previous research has shown is the result of differences in concentration for key chemical compounds, including ethyl butyrate, butyl acetate, isoamyl acetate, ethyl caproate, hexyl acetate, 1-octanol, nonanal, ethyl octanoate, and ethyl decanoate.

Characteristics and correlation of flavor substances and hangover indexes in Chinese baijiu during storage.

It is generally believed that there is a great relationship between hangover and the age of Baijiu. However, what factors make Baijiu (stored for a long time) feel better after drinking has not been well explained. In this study, ethanol metabolism, oxidation stress, inflammation and release of inhibitory neurotransmitter were selected as the indicator of hangover.
