Published: April 2022

Flexible triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have attracted increasing interest since their advent in 2012. In comparison with other flexible electrodes, hydrogels possess transparency, stretchability, biocompatibility, and tunable ionic conductivity, which together provide great potential as current collectors in TENGs for wearable applications. The development of hydrogel-based TENGs (H-TENGs) is currently a burgeoning field but research efforts have lagged behind those of other common flexible TENGs. In order to spur research and development of this important area, a comprehensive review that summarizes recent advances and challenges of H-TENGs will be very useful to researchers and engineers in this emerging field. Herein, the advantages and types of hydrogels as soft ionic conductors in TENGs are presented, followed by detailed descriptions of the advanced functions, enhanced output performance, as well as flexible and wearable applications of H-TENGs. Finally, the challenges and prospects of H-TENGs are discussed.

Most of the developed flexible hydrogel supercapacitors struggle to maintain their electrochemical stability and structural integrity under tensile strain. Therefore, developing a flexible supercapacitor with excellent mechanical properties and stable electrochemical performance under different strains remains a challenge. Based on the previous cartilage-like structure, we designed a new coarse nanofiber bundle and ordered network.

Soft materials underpin many domains of science and engineering, including soft robotics, structured fluids, and biological and particulate media. In response to applied mechanical, electromagnetic or chemical stimuli, such materials typically change shape, often dramatically. Predicting their structure is of great interest to facilitate design and mechanistic understanding, and can be cast as an optimization problem where a given energy function describing the physics of the material is minimized with respect to the shape of the domain and additional fields.

Objectives: Periodontitis is an inflammatory and destructive disease caused by dental plaque, which can result in the immune microenvironment disorders and loss of periodontal support tissue. In order to promote the restoration of local microenvironment stability, a functional biomaterial Gelatin methacryloyl @MP196/exos based on characteristics of disease occurrence is designed.

Methods: Transmission electron microscopy, nanosight particle tracking analysis and western blot analysis were applied to prove the presence of exos in GelMA@MP196/exos.

Chinese herbal medicine has offered an enormous source for developing novel bio-soft materials. In this research, the natural polysaccharide isolated from the Chinese herbal medicine was employed as the secondary building block to fabricate a "hybrid" hydrogel with synthetic poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) polymers. Thanks to the presence of mannose units that contain cis-diol motifs on the chain of the polysaccharides, efficient crosslinking with the borax is allowed and reversible covalent borate ester bonds are formed.

Many tissues exhibit structural anisotropy, which imparts orientation-specific properties and functions. However, recapitulating the cellular patterns found in anisotropic tissues presents a remarkable challenge, particularly when using soft and wet hydrogels. Herein, we develop self-assembled anisotropic magnetic FeO micropatterns on polyethylene glycol hydrogels utilizing dipole-dipole interactions.
